Jan 13 - Apr 9    Al Norte Al Norte: Latino Life in North Carolina

Opening January 13, 2020 through April 9, 2020:  Mountain Heritage Center gallery at Hunter Library 161, M – F 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM.

Photographs of Latino North Carolinians working, worshiping and celebrating will be highlighted in an exhibit hosted by the Mountain Heritage Center at Western Carolina University. Al Norte Al Norte: Latino Life in North Carolina, opening Monday, January 13, 2020 is the Center’s first exhibit to focus on the state’s Latino community, and also the museum’s first bilingual exhibit. With English and Spanish descriptions, Al Norte Al Norte features 51 compelling images by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist José Galvez. From business owners and farm laborers to grandparents and kindergarten graduates, the photographs capture the daily life of Latino North Carolinians. Many Latinos have made North Carolina their home since the 1980’s, in search of better economic opportunity.  Shot over 10 years, the exhibit’s black & white photographs depict the daily life of Latino North Carolinians adapting to and shaping life across our state. Less political in nature, the exhibit seeks to underscore the cultural similarities that exist for everyone today.

Admission is free, and this exhibit on loan from the NC Museum of History, will run through April 9, 2020 in the Center’s gallery at Hunter Library, 176 Central Dr. in Cullowhee.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers are vocal artists and students at Fisk University in Nashville, TN., who sing and travel worldwide. The original Fisk Jubilee Singers introduced ‘slave songs’ to the world in 1871 and were instrumental in preserving this unique American musical tradition known today as Negro spirituals. They broke racial barriers in the US and abroad in the late 19th century and entertained Kings and Queens in Europe. At the same time, they raised money in support of their beloved school. The Fisk Jubilee Singers continue the tradition of singing the Negro spiritual around the world. This allows the ensemble to share this rich culture globally, while preserving this unique music.

Feb 15    Outhouse Races In Sapphire

Join us for the exciting Outhouse Races, taking place on February 15, 2020 at 3pm in Sapphire.

Crazy? Maybe. Dangerous? Perhaps. Fun? Without a doubt! You won’t find Outhouse Races on Snow anywhere else in North Carolina! Dozens of outhouses race to compete for the throne. Spectators come from throughout the southeast to line the course and cheer on those brave enough to see if the outhouse crashes and burns or sails across the finish line. The Outhouse Races have been named a ‘Top 20’ event in the Southeast for February by Southeast Tourism Society.

Your Homemade Outhouses can be made of wood, cardboard, plastic, or any other homemade items. There are three people to a team and outhouses are secured on a set of skis, which can be provided to you by the Sapphire Valley Ski Area. These skis are pushed by two team members, while one team member ‘sits’ inside.

Outhouses are equipped with a seat with at least one (1) hole, and a roll of toilet paper, or alternative wiping source. The race course is a two-lane track on packed snow (or on ice), with two teams racing each other head to head over a length of approximately 120 feet (40 yards), the first 30 feet being propelled by the pushers and the last 90 feet under its own gravitational power.

This event is as exciting as ‘Drag Racing’ if you use your imagination. Outhouses can be very simple, or as elaborate as anyone wants them to be.

We will have sign ups for the rebuilding of East LaPorte River Access Park, sediment testing and more. Attendees will be trained to test the water in their own backyard and be able to add this information to much larger database. This event is designed to find and train team leaders and team members for a stream watch group, to do a rehabilitation of watershed rivers and streams, and find some volunteers to help do the behind the scenes work. We will also help you find yourself in the Watershed by using a fantastic new app on your smartphone! More information is available on Facebook at Watershed Association of the Tuckasegee River.

Feb 28    Time and Again: Glass Works by Sara Beth Post and Kit Paulson

Funded in part by the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass, this exhibition brings together two Penland-based artists—Kit Paulson and SaraBeth Post—whose works in glass explore ideas about time, history, memory, and the antique.

In many of their works, objects from the past are remade and reimagined in glass, creating a bridge between past and present.
