Events are organized by the N.C Wildlife Resources Commision and part of National Fishing and Boating Week and allow kids to fish for free while registering to win prizes, including a statewide drawing for a unified lifetime license donated by Neuse Sport Shop. The wildlife Commision will donate an additional 100 prizes, such as fishing rods, towels, playing cards and mini tackle boxes. At many Sites, fish will be restocked before the events.

Jun 3    Adult Summer Reading Program
The Jackson County Public Library will start registration for the Adult Summer Reading Program on Monday, June 3rd. This years reading theme is the Great Jackson County Read: Armchair Traveler. Anyone interested can come to the Reference Desk on the second floor of the Library. 

This year's theme is designed to encourage reading across a wide spectrum of countries, cultures, diverse authors and genres. Patrons will receive raffle tickets based on the number of pages read between June 3 and August 3. The tickets then can be used to try to win one of several different prizes. 

Jackson County Public Library is grateful to the sponsors of the Great Jackson County Read: Armchair Traveler. The sponsors are BarkWood Studio (Gayle Woody), Baxley's Chocolates, Black Balsam Outdoors, Cullowheegee Farms, Emily Rose Photography, The Friends of the Library Used Bookstore, The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, Nationwide Insurance (Howard Allman), and WCU Athletics. Jun 11    Belcher Collage of Fine and Performing Arts students to perform at Library
The Jackson County Public Library is hosting 5 WCU Fine Arts students as they present the Summer of 2019 Musical Review. This presentation is free and open to all ages.
The David Orr Belcher Collage of Fine and Performing Arts at Western Carolina University presents WCU Roadworks. This free program began with the Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged performances from the students in the school of Stage and Screen in 2016. In 2017, the students form the School of Music were featured in a variety show, Living the Dream. The summer of 2018 brought the students form the School of Art and Design out and around the community in an "Art Trailer". The program has now come full circle and will feature again the School of Stage and Screen students in the summer of 2019 Musical Review. 
The Event is co sponsored by Friends of the Jackson County Public Library.

Carolina Public Humanities and Southwestern Community Collage present The Many Historians of Western North Carolina, a conversation on the historians of the western region of North Carolina. Listen in on a round table discussion lead by local historians and representatives from cultural institutions. You will also have an opportunity to share your own memories and family history though oral history interviews. You may bring in any historical records that are connected to the western region that will be scanned for preservation of memory. These documents may include, but are not limited to, letters, maps, family records, and photographs.

Local artist Gayle Barker Woody presents her handmade art.  Gayle  is a paper maker using unique items like wasp nests in her paper. She is a print maker, hand builds pottery and makes hand made books from her papers.  Known in our community for her years teaching art in the public school system Gayle's work will be on display for sale at Gallery 1 Sylva during the months of June and July.   A reception in her honor will occur on Friday, June 7th beginning at 5:00 p.m.  Please join us - refreshments will be served.

On the brickyard outside Hunter Library and the Mountain Heritage Center

The Mountain Heritage Center and the office of Mentoring and Persistence to Success are co-sponsoring a Mini-Mountain Heritage Day event Friday, June 28th  from 3:00 - 5:00 pm to celebrate the cultural traditions of western North Carolina and traditional crafts.  Broom maker Mickey Sizemore, weaver Mattie Davenport from the WCU Writing Commons, natural dyer Erin Tapley from the WCU Art Department will all be sharing skills used in the mountains over the years.

The event is free and open to the public and will take place on the brickyard adjacent to Hunter Library and the Mountain Heritage Center.  For WCU students this is a DegreePlus event. For more information or directions on parking please call (828) 227-7129.
