Western Carolina University’s next First Thursday Old-Time and Bluegrass Series event will feature Ol’ Dirty Bathtub performing at HomeBase in Cullowhee. The concert and jam session will take place Thursday, April 4, beginning at 7 p.m.

Ol’ Dirty Bathtub is a Jackson County string band led by Brad Boulet on vocals and strings. The band also consists of Jerad Davis, also on strings and vocals, Neil Lippard on guitar, Carter Giegerich on dobro, and Adam Bigelow on bass. These experienced musicians formed this band several years ago and have performed across the region at events including Concerts on the Creek and the “Community Give Back Benefit” in Sylva as well as at Nantahala Outdoor Center and Oscar Blues Brewery. They have also performed at the Hunt House in Marietta GA and Folkmoot in Waynesville. In June, 2018, they released their first cd “Pack Mule.” Their music is steeped in the bluegrass and old time traditions of western North Carolina but they have been known to delve into more modern tunes as well. There’s no telling what you will hear, from traditional tunes to 90s pop, but it’ll be played on stringed instruments and it will be fun.

The First Thursday concert series is free and open to the public. Pickers and singers of all ages and experience levels are invited to take part in the jam session which starts at 8pm. This session is also open to those who just want to listen. HomeBase is adjacent to the WCU campus at 83 Central Drive in Cullowhee. The research stories will illustrate how children are engaged in reproducing and disrupting racism, classism, and misogyny and make the argument that these -isms that are so harmful in our society are unsteady, uncertain, and always in flux and being remade. The concept of ‘What-If’ worlds, or spaces where improvisation and creative ways of being are the rule rather than the exception, open up possibilities for being, thinking, and speaking differently.

Apr 5    Photography Show - Jennifer Robin at Gallery 1 Sylva

The photography of Jennifer Robin will be featured at Gallery 1 Sylva in the Backstreet Gallery Room beginning with a reception on Friday April 5th from 5:00-8:00 p.m.

Join Jennifer Robin in a voyage across the continents. Traveling thousands of miles down roads unknown, making an effort to get lost on each turn she makes.  She seeks out adventure while having the patience to wait for the right shot to emerge.  Her passions have led her into the outdoors. Jennifer concentrates on nature and wildlife photography where she feels the  most at home.  She also engages in architecture, automobile, street, and insect photography, finding beauty in even the smallest of creatures.

Come along on her journey of exploration as she takes you places you would never see.Hiking 28 miles round trip hike through the mountainous jungles of Costa Rica while wading crocodile infested waters. Or for the less ambitious  a 20 mile hike along the Hawaiian coastline, in the blazing sun, to find the endangered Laysan Albatross and  Hawaiian Seals. Of if you prefer, you can join her on her excursions from your cozy chair through the imagery she has captured on her adventures.

The gallery is open Wednesday and Friday 11-3:00 p.m and Saturday 12-4:00 p.m. weekly.  Located at 604 West Main Street.   Find us on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/artinthemountains/

Apr 10    Lecture on AI Tech & Healthcare Disparities by Dr. Gus Skorburg: "Will Artificia

Despite its initial promise, AI (Artificial Intelligence) may actually exacerbate existing healthcare disparities!  Advances in AI are proving to be especially beneficial in mental health contexts. These technologies are often able to predict outcomes such as suicide, depression, or dementia further in advance and more accurately than human clinicians. Moreover, AI-enabled technologies are celebrated for their potential to improve the delivery of clinical services to under-served populations, such as rural communities.  And yet, there are a range of ethical issues that arise when using AI to predict mental health outcomes.

A lecture by Bioethicist, Dr. Gus Skorburg.  Dr. Skorburg writes about the talk: Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are proving to be especially beneficial in mental health contexts. These technologies are often able to predict outcomes such as suicide, depression, or dementia further in advance and more accurately than human clinicians. Moreover, AI-enabled technologies are celebrated for their potential to improve the delivery of clinical services to under-served populations, such as rural communities. In this talk, I identify a range of ethical issues that arise when using AI to predict mental health outcomes. I conclude by suggesting that, despite its initial promise, AI may actually exacerbate existing healthcare disparities.

Dr. Skorburg completed his PhD in Philosophy at the University of Oregon. His research is in applied ethics (bioethics, neuroethics, data ethics), moral psychology (virtue theory and feminist ethics), and the philosophy of cognitive science. In addition to the Master in Interdisciplinary Data Science (MIDS) program, he is affiliated with the Department of Philosophy and the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke. He is currently working on a number of theoretical and empirical projects about the nature of self and identity.

Ashley Claxton and Cola Williamson of Somebody's Child have spent the past 5 years "walking the streets in stranger's shoes" and delighting crowds all around the southeast.  Their sound might best be described as the musical embodiment of the life one might live if they were born and raised in Western North Carolina. Both of these Tuckaseegee troubadours have spent most of their lives singing and sharing the gift music, and their mutual joy shines through on stage.
