Aug 12 - Dec 20    Unearthing Our Forgotten Past: Fort San Juan - Now through December

Through December 2019:  Mountain Heritage Center gallery at Hunter Library 161, M – F 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Free of Charge

NOTE: To receive a DegreePlus point, you must complete the questionnaire at the Mountain Heritage Center.

On loan from Exploring Joara Foundation, the exhibit is the first formal museum exhibit showcasing Fort San Juan and Joara, a large Native American town in the late 16th century. It was developed as part of the celebration of the 450th Anniversary of the Juan Pardo Expeditions, during the 1560s, and tells the story of Spanish exploration and the founding of a fort in what is present-day Burke County.

Archaeologists identified the site near Morganton as the location of Joara, one of the largest Native American towns in what is today western North Carolina. The town was occupied from approximately A.D. 1400 to A.D. 1600. Hernando de Soto and Juan Pardo, Spanish explorers, visited the town in the 1560’s. In 2013, archaeologists confirmed that the town was also the site of Fort San Juan, established by Juan Pardo in 1567, nearly 20 years before the English settlement at Roanoke on the coast of North Carolina and 40 years before the English settlement at Jamestown in Virginia. The discovery of the fort, the earliest European settlement in the interior of what is now the United States, has changed history books.

Severance, this new adaptation of Dickens’ ever popular classic fills the stage with first class professional actors, lush costumes, stunning sets and puppetry, song and dance, a heavy dose of humor, and a timeless message. Dec 5    History of the Present: Debt and Violence in Latin America's Current Crisis

LOCATION: Forsyth 213

Over the course of the past weeks and months, Latin America has faced the seismic upheaval of the present order as Latin Americans have taken to the streets and the ballot box to voice their grievances with the present state of things in the region. Protests in Chile and Ecuador, presidential elections in Argentina and Bolivia, and an uncertain peace agreement in Colombia are among just a few indications that change is on the horizon in Latin America. In this talk, we don’t want to predict the future, but rather show how history can help us understand Latin America’s present crises. We’ll focus on a few examples and how histories of violence, state debt, and finances, and dictatorship have shaped popular protests, electoral politics, and political culture.

SPEAKERS: Dr. Kyle Harvey & Dr. Susana Romero

  • Dr. Harvey is an Assistant Professor of Latin American history at Western Carolina University. He earned a PhD in Latin American History from Cornell University. Dr. Harvey’s work focuses on the history of peripheral spaces and technological change in the nineteenth century, particularly in Argentina and Chile.
  • Dr. Romero is an independent scholar. She earned a PhD in Latin American History from Cornell University. Dr. Romero studies the connected histories of urbanization and development in twentieth-century Latin America, with an emphasis on Colombia.

Dec 5    Granny's Mason Jar- First Thursday Concert-Free Admission

Granny’s Mason Jar - First Thursday Concert at HomeBase - Western Carolina University

Western Carolina University’s First Thursday Old-Time and Bluegrass Series returns on Thursday, December 5 beginning at 7pm. The concert and jam session will feature Granny’s Mason Jar performing at HomeBase in Cullowhee on the campus of WCU.

Granny's Mason Jar brings together the talents of Jared “Blue” Smith who has previously played for The Blue Revue and the Bluegrass Lumber Company and Aaron Plantenberg (Common folk, Big House Radio) to continue the tradition of flat picking, Travis picking, and other traditional acoustic guitar styles. Smith and Plantenberg have performed together now since early 2016 and produced a self-titled CD in 2017.

As guitars became more widely available in the early 20th century, they came into the limelight as a lead instrument as opposed to an instrument for accompaniment. The tradition of fiddle tunes in Appalachian music was already centuries old, but the guitar was now more widely available, thanks to the invention of mass production techniques, and the ability to more easily distribute goods through mediums like the Sears Roebuck catalog. The guitar, began to be used to play the lead melodies and it became very fashionable to play old fiddle tunes on the guitar using a plectrum or flat pick. The practice is still alive and well today. Following in the footsteps of Doc Watson, Norman Blake, Clarence White, and Tony Rice, Jared and Aaron will show their expertise while performing duets and solo tunes at this free concert.

The First Thursday concert series is free and open to the public. Pickers and singers of all ages and experience levels are invited to take part in the jam session which starts at 8pm. This session is also open to those who just want to listen. HomeBase is adjacent to the WCU campus at 82 Central Drive, Cullowhee. The First Thursday Series will continue on February 6, 2020.

Dec 5    Granny's Mason Jar - First Thursday Old-Time and Bluegrass Series

LOCATION: Homebase, 82 Central Drive, east side of campus

The 7 p.m. performance will given by the two guitarists who make up Granny’s Mason Jar – Jared “Blue” Smith and Aaron Plantenberg

Smith and Plantenberg are helping to maintain the tradition of flatpicking, Merle Travis-style picking and other traditional acoustic guitar styles. Following in the footsteps of bluegrass and folk music masters Doc Watson, Norman Blake, Clarence White and Tony Rice, they will demonstrate their expertise while performing duets and solo tunes. Smith and Plantenberg, a member of WCU’s Counseling and Psychological Services staff, have performed together since early 2016 and produced a self-titled CD in 2017.

The events are free and open to the public. Pickers and singers of all ages and experience levels are invited to take part in the jam sessions, which also are open to those who just want to listen.
