Jul 1 - Nov 10    Ancient Forms, Modern Minds

Ancient Forms, Modern Minds: Contemporary Cherokee Ceramics

MAY 29 – NOVEMBER 10, 2017

The pottery of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians originated in Western North Carolina nearly 3,000 years ago. Pottery techniques have changed and altered over time, from initial constructions of large, thin-walled pots with stamped geometric designs, to blackware from the early 20th century. Using contemporary techniques, Cherokee potters often incorporate Cherokee syllabary and other popular Cherokee symbols and forms into their work. This exhibition features the work of 11 Cherokee artists, such as Joel Queen and Davey Arch, and brings together both historic and contemporary pottery techniques. Ancient Forms, Modern Minds was organized by the Asheville Art Museum and made possible through the generous support of the Cherokee Preservation Foundation. The WCU Fine Art Museum is the last venue to host this important touring exhibition.

Water Portraits: Barbara Tyroler
May 29 –August 25 2017
Reception Thursday June 15, 5-7pm

Barbara Tyroler is an artist, photographer, educator, and community worker based in Chapel Hill, NC. This exhibition features select works from her water portrait photography. Her water portraits of individuals, groups, and couples are semi-abstractions produced from within or outside of various swimming pools. In some photos, her subjects’ bodies are recognizable, in others, only an impressionistic surface is visible. Tyroler’s portraits are lyrical studies of form and design as well as the story of people and places visually transformed by the reflective properties of water.

This exhibition coincides with the Barbara Tyroler’s workshop, “Considering Abstraction with the Camera” offered through Cullowhee Mountain Arts. The workshop will take place at Western Carolina University from June 11 – 16, 2017.

Aug 11    Mark Powell Reading and Book Signing

Mark Powell will visit City Lights Bookstore on Friday, August  11th at 6:30 p.m. to present his new novel, Small Treasons. With writing that is both devastating and tender, Mark Powell brings his acclaimed eye to an American marriage on the verge of rupture, spinning an all-too-current tale of the world we live in and the world we fear--and how we may not be able to tell the two apart. Ron Rash said of Small Treasons, “A beautifully written, disturbing portrait of Americans searching for meaning in a violent, fragmented world. What a marvelous novel.”

Powell is the author of four previous novels. In 2009 he won the Chaffin Award for contributions to Appalachian literature. He lives in the mountains of North Carolina where he teaches at Appalachian State.

Aug 12    An Appalachian Evening - Freight Hoppers

The Freight Hoppers are a four-piece string band presenting hard-driving Old Time music with an emotional, raw excitement that keeps one foot planted in the past and the other in the present. Of course that's only when they keep their feet still!

The band started presenting their energetic take on fiddle band music four times a day, seven days a week at the Great Smoky Mountains Railway shortly after forming in 1992. Their repertoire includes music that was first recorded in the late 1920's and early 1930's and spans geographically from Mississippi to West Virginia.

The heart of the band is the fiddle and clawhammer banjo combo of Merritt Smith and Frank Lee, while the rhythm section of Allie Burbrink on guitar and Andy Smith on string bass hold down the ensemble. Based out of the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, The Freight Hoppers draw from a deep source of rural southern music for their inspiration, and they are proud to present this music that is still meaningful today.

Before each 'An Appalachian Evening' concert, you can purchase a home-cooked Appalachian Dinner in the Schoolhouse Cafe from 6 to 7:30. Aug 21    Solar Eclipse in Jackson County 2017
At 2:35 p.m. on August 21, 2017, Jackson County residents and visitors will have the chance to watch as the moon moves fully in front of the sun for the first time in 26 years.

Jackson County, North Carolina, is one of the few areas in North Carolina where visitors and residents can experience next year’s extremely rare celestial phenomenon, a total solar eclipse. All of the county’s towns, including Sylva, Dillsboro, Cullowhee and Cashiers, are in the direct path of The Great American Solar Eclipse. On August 21, 2017, the towns will have a stellar view of one of nature’s most visual displays followed by a couple minutes of complete darkness.

For cities inside the 70-mile-wide path of the solar eclipse, the sky will turn pitch black, the air will cool, and stars will be visible in the middle of the day. This is the first time in 26 years that America has seen a total solar eclipse, and it is one of the few that will sweep the nation from Atlantic to Pacific coasts. (View 2017 Total Solar Eclipse in the U.S.)

Jackson County is working to develop events, specific viewing locations, public safety, and accommodation promotions specifically for the eclipse event. The times of total darkness for Jackson County cities are as follows:

Sylva: 1 minute, 45 seconds
Dillsboro: 1 minute, 50 seconds
Cullowhee: 1 minute, 55 seconds
Cashiers: 2 minutes, 23 seconds.

Exhibition: August 21 - December 8, 2017
Reception: Thursday, November 10
5-7pm

WCU FINE ART MUSEUM HOURS:
TUES-FRI 10AM-4PM / THURS 10AM-7PM

The exhibition features more than thirty contemporary Southeastern Native American artists working in a variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking, basketry, sculpture, and pottery.

The WCU Fine Art Museum will be hosting the national traveling exhibition Return from Exile: Contemporary Southeastern Indian Art, curated by Tony A. Tiger, Bobby C. Martin, and Jace Weaver. Return from Exile is one of the first major exhibitions to focus on contemporary artists from tribal nations with an historical connection to the Southeastern United States. These include the so-called Five Civilized Tribes, the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Muscogee (or Creek), and Seminole, all of whom were forcibly removed in the 1830s to present-day Oklahoma as a result of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The title of the exhibition represents the return of these artists to their ancestral homelands.

As part of the exhibition, on November 10 the WCU Fine Art Museum at Bardo Arts Center will host a full day Contemporary Native American Art Symposium.

9:00am-4:00pm: Full Day Symposium | Free registration required
5:00pm-7:00pm: Reception honoring Return from Exile | Free and open to the public, registration not required.
