Mar 2    "First Thursday" Concert

FREE old-time music concert.  Bring your stringed instrument if you'd like to participate in a jam session with them from 8-9pm.

Blue Eyed Girl
Old-time band
Buncombe County, NC
The three women who make up the old-time band Blue Eyed Girl have all spent their lives absorbing traditional music and dance. The Asheville area-residents grew up in families for whom old-time music was a way of life, and as girls they picked up the tradition at a very young age.

Banjo player Annie Fain Liden grew up in Brasstown. Her parents, Martha Owen and David Liden, are well-known area old-time musicians who are also listed in this Traditional Artist Directory. Annie Fain teaches banjo and creates handmade books in Asheville. Mandolinist and guitarist Ellie Grace also comes from a family of musicians. In addition to touring with Blue Eyed Girl and with her sister Leela, Ellie plays with the Dirk Powell Band, and teaches percussive dance at UNC-Asheville. Pearl Mueller, who grew up in Black Mountain, has been playing the fiddle since she was a small child. She is also a member of the contra dance band Mock Turtle Soup.

All three musicians are also accomplished traditional dancers, a talent that they weave into their performances.

Mar 13    The Nile Project Panel Discussion

Music, Citizen Engagement & Water Resource Management : panel discussion moderated by Bardo Arts Center Executive Director, Denise Drury Homewood
2:30 – 4pm in Room 130 Bardo Arts Center

Join the Bardo Arts Center for a moderated panel discussion highlighting issues at the intersection of music, citizen engagement and water resource management. Human life depends on the availability and quality of water to sustain our health, grow our food, power our homes with electricity, and stimulate our economies. However, due to overpopulation, increased demand for food, climate change and pollution, as much as two thirds of the world’s citizens may face water stressed conditions severely impacting the living and economic conditions of communities, countries, and regions by 2025. Without water, we cannot survive. How can we, as individuals, become more involved in the management of this precious and limited resource? During this panel, participants will explore ways in which music has been instrumentalized as a citizen engagement strategy to overcome political stakeholder barriers, create a common understanding between competing interests, and build constituencies for action both between and within nations where water has become an impediment to peace and socio economic development.

America is the world's largest jailer and our over-burdened corrections system treats individuals as numbers. I COME FROM focuses on incarcerated poets and playwrights who use the power of creativity to change the direction of their lives. Their poems and plays reflect hard lives lived, tough environments negotiated, past mistakes made. This film focuses on six incarcerated artists whose work declares a wish, a will to survive, to grow as human beings and embrace architecture of change.

Title: Research Efforts on Fingerprints, Trace Drug Analysis and Wearable Biosensors

Two projects aimed towards addressing significant, unmet needs in forensic science and another project involving healthcare monitoring will be described.  The first is enhancement of latent fingerprints on gun shell cartridges.  While many methods have been investigated, evidence quality prints have rarely been obtained.  Our recent studies of electrochemical polymerization of heterolenes in ionic liquids resulted in formation of black adherent polymer coatings on metals with excellent enhancement of second and third level detail, including confirmed reproduction of sweat pore patterns on the friction ridges.  The second project is aimed at detection of trace drug residue on fabrics such as clothing, upholster and floor coverings.  Construction of thin, patterned absorbent disks compatible with Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART) mass spectrometry will be described.  Finally, previous work on blood glucose monitoring systems used by people with diabetes will be reviewed.  And, a vision towards a wearable electronic hydration monitor presented.

Mar 25    Dana Wildsmith to Present Her Novel

Dana Wildsmith returns to City Lights Bookstore on Saturday, March 25th at 3 p.m. to present her novel, Jumping. Her novel portrays with great skill and finesse the collision of the two worlds of a Georgia school teacher and a small charming Mexican boy.  Wildsmith “captures the experiences of what happens when "illegals" try to cross into the United States, "jumping" the border. Cesar, the main character, is especially powerfully portrayed with his humor, intelligence, and desire to provide a better life for his family,” said Jim Minick, author of Fire is Your Water.

National Farmworker Awareness Week is March 24th-31st so to recognize the week and to support Vecinos Farmworker Health Program Dana has requested that a portion of each book sale be donated to that organization. To reserve copies of Jumping please call City Lights Bookstore at 828-586-9499.
