Oct 10 - Jan 11    Horace Kephart...

In 1904, a 42-year-old librarian named Horace Kephart came to western North Carolina looking for a fresh start in the southern Appalachian wilderness. Over the next twenty-seven years, his numerous articles and books captured a disappearing culture, provided practical advice for generations of outdoor enthusiasts, and spearheaded the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Mountain Heritage Center’s Kephart Collection is composed of 127 objects, including Kephart’s tent, sleeping bag, backpack and the writing desk. The exhibit will display many of these objects in a campsite setting.

“Horace Kephart:  Revealing an Enigma... Horace Kephart in the Great Smoky Mountains” will be on view in the Mountain Heritage Center’s Hunter Library exhibit gallery (HL 161) through March 31,2017. For more information, contact the Mountain Heritage Center at 828-227-7129.

SEPTEMBER 12 – NOVEMBER 7

RECEPTION SEPTEMBER 29

The Language of Weaving challenges what Western cultures traditionally consider literature. Through a lexicon of designs and patterns, Maya weavers provide rich narratives for the readers of their textiles. This exhibition examines the work of three distinct communities of Maya fiber artists in Mexico. Viewers will experience examples of the work of two female-led cooperatives of Maya fiber artists located in Chiapas state, Tsobol Anzetik in Chenalhó and Jalabil in Oxchuc, as well as the work of the Bonilla family in Santa Elena in Yucatan state. The Language of Weaving translates, for Spanish and English speaking audiences, the woven Maya tales of these communities.

Oct 12    Hypnotist chrisjones

chrisjones (one word) is one of the newest and most energetic performers in the college market. chrisjones has been taking his insane hypnosis show to high schools and universities across the country. Giving the audience an incredibly interactive show, his hypnosis show allows your students to become the stars! chrisjones offers a performance unlike any other and guarantees to work with your event planners to draw the biggest audience possible.

Chicago-native, chrisjones took a roundabout way to becoming one of today’s most entertaining performers on the college market. A nationally ranked athlete in college, he studied Sociology and Psychology claiming himself to be a “social engineer with deviant motives.” He was a Resident Assistant for three years and used magic as a means of connecting with students living in the hall.
After years of performing only magic and stand-up comedy at weddings, bars and smoky nightclubs, chrisjones realized he wanted “to learn some new tricks.” While in graduate school, he became fascinated with the art of hypnosis and found the missing piece of his show. Performing three shows a week while obtaining a Masters studying Therapeutic Recreation, he tirelessly analyzed every second of his show to find the perfect balance of conjuring, psychology, comedy and suggestion.

Physically living on university campuses for SEVEN YEARS, gave chrisjones the unique opportunity to roll out of bed (in the “dorms”) everyday and practice hypnosis and close up magic for real and unbiased audiences. After years of perfecting his art, semester after semester of new fans and friends, chrisjones is offering your students a hypnotic experience they will never forget!

The Language of Weaving : contemporary Maya textiles

Oct 18    HR Summit - SCC's Small Business Center
Southwestern Community College's Small Business Center will offer a class, "HR Summit," on Tuesday, October 18 from 8-5 on the Sylva campus.

Human Resources is probably one of the more complicated aspects of running a business, yet it’s incredibly important.  The complexities of working with people aren’t managed on a spreadsheet, and often you don’t have the knowledge or tools to handle these situations the best way.  Mistakes in HR can be costly, but unfortunately they are common.   Your employees are one of your greatest assets.  You must protect and manage them as such.   Join us at this one-day summit to learn about important human resource related topics such as:        - Basic employment laws        - Hiring the right person for the job         - What great managers do differently         - Managing employee performance         - Team communication and appreciation         - Employee benefits.

For more information or to register for the class please call 828-339-4211.

Oct 26    Speaker:Ryan Martin

Ryan Martin was born with Spina Bifida and had both his legs amputated when he was two years old. Discovering basketball at 12 years old transformed Ryan’s world from “wheelchair bound” to bound for college, for professional basketball, and for traveling overseas.

In 2007, Ryan joined the professional basketball league in Spain, playing as point guard for CID Casa Murcia Getafe in the last four seasons. Before Ryan went pro, he attended college at Southwest Minnesota State University and led SMSU to the NWBA National Title Game in 2001. He graduated in 2002 with a degree in Secondary Education and a minor in Sociology. After graduation, Ryan joined the Phoenix Wheelchair Suns and played in the 2005 NWBA All-Star games.

Realizing the profound, positive impact wheelchair basketball had on his own life, in 2011 Ryan founded the Ryan Martin Foundation with the mission to “help youth and adult athletes with disabilities live independent, impassioned, productive and full lives through sports training, mentoring and education.”

Today the foundation offers youth mentoring and basketball camps, and is developing basketball camps in partnership with the US Army for soldiers living with new disabilities. Ryan also dedicates much of his time to motivational speaking appearances.

The Language of Weaving : contemporary Maya textiles
