Sep 2    Concerts on the Creek 2016- Erica Nicole
One of Nashville's most promising young country music talents is returning to Jackson County on Friday, Sept. 2 when Erica Nicole closes out the seventh season of Concerts on the Creek at the Bridge Park gazebo stage in Sylva, N.C., from 7-9 p.m.

Erica Nicole is a 2014 Western Carolina University graduate and has family ties in the Sapphire Valley area of Jackson County, where she frequently returns to visit loved ones and friends.

The past couple of years, Erica Nicole has toured all over the United States making fans and friends at radio. Combined with her powerful vocal range and tireless work ethic – these efforts have made her one of the top newcomers in the Nashville country music scene. The release of her brand new album, "I'm Making Mine," has definitely added some fuel to that already strong flame.

The title cut hit the Top 10 on the MusicRow Country Breakout Chart. It also helped the Georgia native write her name in the history books, becoming the first female on an independent label to notch three consecutive Top 20 records following “I Listen To My Bad Girl” (#17) and “It’s Comin’ Down.” (#16)

One song from the disc that many of her fans and friends and radio have buzzed about is the stunning “Like I Do,” which teams her with powerhouse vocalist Jamie O’Neal.

Inspired by classic Country icons George Strait, Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline, Erica Nicole channels the magnetism of a more unusual musical influence - Tina Turner - during her live shows. This talented entertainer brings high-energy, laser-like focus and rafter-raising vocals to the stage night after night to her ever-expanding fan base. She's opened for superstars Eric Church, Miranda Lambert and Brad Paisley, headlined her own shows, and sung the National Anthem at Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox) and CitiField (NY Mets). Fans of this engaging singer/songwriter know they're in for a no-holds-barred, swing for the fences performance every time the blonde bombshell steps into the spotlight.

Erica is the 2014 winner of the Nashville Industry Music Award for Best Female Country Artist of the Year and on Feb. 8, 2016 became the first female to win the award for Music Row CountryBreakout Independent Artist of the Year at the 14th Annual Music Row CountryBreakout Awards. The award is based upon spin count among Country Radio stations, making Erica Nicole the most played independent artist of the year and the highest ranked independent of 2015.

Concerts on the Creek are held every Friday from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 7-9 p.m., at the Bridge Park gazebo stage in Sylva.

The Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series.

These events are free and open to the public with donations encouraged. Bring a chair or blanket.

Concerts on the Creek is a Blue Ridge Music Trail partner.

Sep 3    Ann Hite to Present Her New Novel

Ann Hite will visit City Lights Bookstore on Saturday, September 3rd at 3 p.m. to present her new novel. Set in Black Mountain, NC, Sleeping Above Chaos is a blend of historical research and a tightly woven story. Imagine the relationship triangle from East of Eden and set it deep in the Appalachian Mountains. Add a couple of ghosts, a good measure of dysfunction, and a whole lot of twists and turns, and you have Ann Hite's new Black Mountain novel, Sleeping Above Chaos. Hite's fourth novel returns to Swannanoa Gap, a small town at the foot of Black Mountain, and introduces new characters while revisiting some favorites from her previous novels.

Sep 15    Fall Foliage Presentation
The Jackson County Public Library in Sylva is hosting a fall foliage presentation by Dan Pittillo on Thursday. September 15th in the Community Room. This program is free of charge.

Dr. Pittillo will be giving attendees the tools for predicting the coming fall color. " In the case of the complex series that leads to fall leaf change, the variables far outnumber the certainties." Pittillo says. "For this presentation, I'll give the steps I use to come up with the predictions beginning with the spring growth of trees, summer rainfall, and fall droughts, bright sunny days, and frost. This will help the observers to make a personal expectation of the quality of color change to expect."

J. Dan Pittillo is a retired professor of biology at Western Carolina University. He taught general biology, botany, dendrology, local flora, and natural history courses for 40 years. His fall color predictions began in 1990 and continued through the first four years of this century. He continues to be sought privately about his predictions.

Sep 17    Joint Poetry Reading

On Saturday, September 17th at 3 p.m., Linda Parsons and Sue Weaver Dunlap will visit City Lights Bookstore for a joint poetry reading. Linda will read from her fourth collection, This Shaky Earth. She is a poet, playwright and an editor at The University of Tennessee. Her poems have appeared inThe Iowa Review, The Georgia Review, Asheville Poetry Review and others.

Sue will read from her collection, Knead. Georgann Eubanks, author of the Literary Trails of North Carolina series, said of Knead, “Sue Weaver Dunlap has laid the table full. Sep 22    Reception: Vision & Vistas

Closing reception for exhibit.

Great Smoky Mountains: Vision & Vistas is and exhibition of sixty original photographs and drawings made by photographers and artists inspired by the grand vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains. Professional photographers include such notables as Jim Thompson, George Masa, and George Grant, as well as amateurs who hiked with the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. Herbert Pelton and Nace Brock created images used by Asheville promoters to advocate for a national park in the Appalachians. Working for the National Park Service, Hiram Wilburn and Charles Grossman documented mountain culture within park boundaries and the road construction projects that forever altered it. Irving Fromer, J.D. Chaffin, and Alan Youngblood, men enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps, made pencil sketches of a wilderness previously unknown to them. Together, these artists focused on the grandeur of the landscape to lobby for a national park and promote conservation in the southern U.S. Without their vision, perhaps the Great Smoky Mountains National Park would not have come into being. Since its inception, the park has been a popular destination, setting visitation records topping 10 million annually.

Resident Alien, a brand new musical by WCU’s own Katya Stanislavskaya, is the story of Sasha, Sveta, and Nastya Berdichevsky, a family in the throes of Russian/Soviet immigration in the 1990’s. A professor stuck in the past, a musician willing to adapt, and a teenager whose culture shock coincides with her coming-of-age, the Berdichevsky’s represent the full spectrum of the successes and failures of the immigrant experience. Resident Alien is about the personal choices we face in a new world: which parts of ourselves to retain, and which to jettison in order to succeed.

Sep 23    Comedian Eric O'Shea

If you do not want to find out how the movie ends, DO NOT KEEP READING…

O.K…you have been warned….

Eric James O’Shea was born Sept 16, 19_ _ in New Haven, CT… he was an altar boy, SHY nerd, but future Dallas Cowboys QB/WR at St. Brendan’s School from K-8. From there and never having kissed a girl yet, he continued his dry spell attending an all boys high school at Fairfield Prep from grades 9-12 — again, no girls, but this is where his O.C.D. and A.D.D. became pronounced… what a stud. After this hell, he parlayed his manhood at Marquette University where he majored in Sports Broadcasting (the Dallas Cowboys thing didn’t work out when he found out he was allergic to pain)…. But after finding out he liked to TAKE HIS TIME with creating, the fast pace news business became a no-go…. But he still loved the stage and had “something to say”… what to do???!!! So on his birthday, he went up at the SAFE HOUSE and finished second to last in an open mic comedy compeition… but one joke DID work… and he was hooked on this thing where you can, “simply talk and make people laugh.”

…So for the next 3 years with his trusty Ford Escort (LX–sniff!), he traveled the midwest doing any show he could… paid or unpaid… then one open mic night at NYC’s Caroline’s Comedy Club, he got lucky and did the best 10 minutes he had…. It resulted in a coveted “holding” deal with ABC/DISNEY…. So he paid off college, moved to New York City, and discovered sushi….

When the deal ended, and still immature, he jumped into the wonderful, exciting world of the “college market”… 13 years later, he is still doing it, loving it, and won the “2007 National College Comedian of the Year” voted by over 5000 campuses nationwide…. He has kept busy traveling during that span, averaging over 70+ schools every year, along with CORPORATE SHOWS, FESTIVALS, and THEATRES—-and he can oddly place every highway on a blank U.S. map….

Then one night, tring to combine his broadcasting background with comedy, he created his “Songs for Commercials” bit, which not only got over 4 MILLION hits on YOUTUBE, but also a RAVE review from Mr. Steven Spielberg…. He was so honored and simply in awe of how fast the sketch spread all over the world…. People have even written from Dubai, Iraq, and Australia…. He doesn’t know where they are on a map….

But he does know where L.A. is…and thank goodness…when Eric was invited to perform his “Commercials” LIVE at the 2009 CREATIVE EMMY AWARDS! Walking the red carpet, hangin with some legends, and stealing celebrity gift bags–it was an amazing evening…(and got to perform with Carol Burnett, Betty White, Seth MacFarlane, Ted Danson, and Jamie Lynn Siegler, to name a few.)

Eric continues working hard, appreciating his family, health, and simplicity…. He is always trying to put a fun spin on things, while not losing sight of the most important thing–empathy for others…. He is so thankful to all that support him on his journey, stays humble, and gets better looking every year….

Now for how the story ends….

C’mon, he doesn’t know… did you really think he did?!?! He has no idea… but how bout this?!? Just keep laughing, and we’ll write it together….

Sep 24    Katherine Soniat Poetry Reading

Katherine Soniat will return to City Lights Bookstore on Saturday, September 24th at 3 p.m. to read her latest collection of poetry. In her beguiling new collection, Bright Stranger, Katherine invites readers to celebrate the unfinished and unsure. The poems in this volume to not demand or offer certainty, existing instead in the spaces between the real and the imagined, between past, present and future. They explore the human connection with nature, contemplating loss in the erosion of rock spires and rebirth in the blossoming of an amaranth.

Sep 27    The Language of Weaving

The Language of Weaving : contemporary Maya textiles
SEPTEMBER 12 – NOVEMBER 7

RECEPTION SEPTEMBER 29

The Language of Weaving challenges what Western cultures traditionally consider literature. Through a lexicon of designs and patterns, Maya weavers provide rich narratives for the readers of their textiles. This exhibition examines the work of three distinct communities of Maya fiber artists in Mexico. Viewers will experience examples of the work of two female-led cooperatives of Maya fiber artists located in Chiapas state, Tsobol Anzetik in Chenalhó and Jalabil in Oxchuc, as well as the work of the Bonilla family in Santa Elena in Yucatan state. The Language of Weaving translates, for Spanish and English speaking audiences, the woven Maya tales of these communities.

Sep 30    Tim Barnwell’s Newest Vistas Book

Tim Barnwell will return to City Lights Bookstore on Friday, September 30th at 6:30 p.m. to present his new book. In Great Smoky Mountain Vistas, Tim Barnwell offers panoramic photographs from overlooks in and around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, aerial photographs of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, and articles on popular area attractions and activities to create this unique and comprehensive guidebook. He identifies the mountain peaks you can see from each overlook along Newfound Gap Road, Foothills Parkway and Blue Ridge Parkway that view the park, in Cataloochee Valley and Cades Cove, and 360-degree/6-page panoramic views from Clingmans Dome and Max Patch.

While the mountain peak identifications are a unique component of the book, in also includes a host of articles about activities in and around the park including camping, picnicking, fishing, hiking and waterfalls, horseback riding, bears, and nature photography. It features sections detailing the main attractions of the park including Newfound Gap Road, Cades Cove, Oconaluftee, Sugarlands, Little River Road,  Cataloochee Valley, and hidden gems in and outside its boundaries, off the beaten path, such as the Cherohala Skyway, Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, Greenbrier, Max Patch, Tail of the Dragon and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, making this the ideal travel guidebook, possibly the most comprehensive available on the park and its environs. Great Smoky Mountains Vistas celebrates the National Park Services 100th Anniversary in 2016 and is an invaluable companion to Mr. Barnwell’s best-selling Blue Ridge Parkway Vistas: A Comprehensive Identification Guide to What You See from the Many Overlooks.
