Aug 5    Songwriters in the Round - Balsam Mountain Inn

A longtime favorite trio in the Balsam round, Jerry Vandiver, Tim Buppert and Leslie Satcher return on August 6.

Vandiver has seen his songs recorded by Tim McGraw, Phil Vassar, Lonestar, Barbara Mandrell, Lee Greenwood and The Oak Ridge Boys, among others.  He scored a top five single with Gene Watson’s “Don’t Waste It On The Blues”, a top 20 on Wild Rose’s “Go Down Swingin’” and a number two on Tim McGraw’s “For A Little While”.  Jerry’s songs appear on over 15 million records, two of which are hanging on the walls of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Not long after she moved to Nashville two decades ago, Leslie Satcher met Naomi Judd, who helped her hone her songwriting skills. Soon Leslie teamed with accomplished father and son songwriters Max D. and Max T. Barnes, and Island Bound Music ensued. Seven years of cuts by artists such as Joe Diffie, Sara Evans, Lee Ann Womack, Wade Hayes, Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Pam Tillis, and Willie Nelson helped Leslie take the next step in her career.

A successful songwriter and one of Nashville’s most sought after singers, Tim Buppert has performed with Trisha Yearwood, Michael Peterson, Paul Brandt, Anita Cochran and Kevin Sharp and Meredith Edwards. As a songwriter, Tim’s work has been recorded by Trisha Yearwood, The Wiggins, Continental Divide, Marty Haden, Perfect Stranger, and his work includes the hit single by Yankee Grey called “Another Nine Minutes” and a number one single by Kevin Sharp called “She’s Sure Taking it Well”.

Katie Rose Guest Pryal and Lauren Faulkenberry will both be presenting their new books, Chasing Chaos and Bayou My Love respectively, on Tuesday, August 9th at 6:30pm at City Lights Bookstore.

The third book in the Entanglement series,Chasing Chaos follows the story of Daphne Saito, a character from the previous installments of the series. Daphne, a beautiful and talented Hollywood screenwriter, might look like she has the perfect life, but on the inside she's lost. Still traumatized by an accident involving her best friend, Greta, five years earlier, Daphne is afraid to love. Danger is on the horizon for all of Daphne's friends—and for her. Katie lives in Chapel Hill, NC, and works as a freelance journalist, a creative writing teacher at Duke, and an author.

Bayou My Love is a story that is part love story, part mystery, and a blend of comedy and drama. It follows 31-year-old Enza Parker, a woman who is struggling to change the trajectory of her life. To prove to her overbearing father she can flip a house on her own, she takes on a project much too ambitious for her — and it puts her in the path of the most alluring man she’s ever met. Lauren is a resident of Whittier, NC. She is a former writing instructor at Western Carolina University, and now she leads workshops at Penland and at Wildacres in book arts, printmaking, and more.

Aug 13    Stephen Crimi Book Signing

Stephen Crimi will be presenting his first book, Katabatic Wind: Good Craic Fueled by Fumes from the Abyss at City Lights Bookstore on Saturday, August 13th at 3p.m.  Katabatic Wind is an inspired collection of essays drawn from the lost unknown sacred tradition of the West. Using the lens of mythology, pre-Socratic Greek thought, this book illumines how these traditions shadow life lived today. The kernel of these essays is loss, longing for return, and the grief of living in a society without an inkling of its sacred origin story.

Stephen Crimi has a degree in English literature from Union College, and spent over a decade in traditional Yoga study at Yoga Anand Ashram in Amityville, NY. He's done time as an editor, estate gardener, cook, massage therapist, and most recently, running a biodynamic garden and fiber farm, Philosophy Farm, for twelve years with his wife of three decades, Krys. They now live in Asheville, in the mountains of North Carolina, where they continue to write and publish.

They play a style of highly progressive style of Southern Funk Rock that has won over an eclectic audience everywhere they perform. Incorporating elements from R&B, Jazz, and Funk with the best of the Rock, Progressive, Indie and Metal, they cross over genres with ease.

From the famous Bele Chere festival in Asheville, to clubs across the southeast including The House of Blues in New Orleans, The Orange Peel in Asheville, and The Fillmore in Charlotte, the band has a growing and wildly dedicated fan base.

They completed recording of their first album, Spread It Heavy in 2014 at the historic Reflection Sound Studios in Charlotte, N.C., with Mark Williams (Southern Culture On The Skids) engineering, Jamie Hoover of the legendary Spongetones producing, and the renowned Dan Millice mastering. They were the last band to record in that historic studio.

Porch 40 is especially known for their extraordinarily intense live shows and high level of musicianship. They have shared the stage and performed with The Doobie Brothers, The Marshall Tucker Band, REO Speedwagon, Leftover Salmon, Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and more.

Among the best and most original bands to come out of North Carolina, their insanely tight, engaging and energetic performances make them favorites wherever they go.

Porch 40 is:
Spencer Bradley - Drums, Scott Burr - Vocals/Saxophone, Andrew Duncan -Vocals/Rhythm Guitar, Carter McDevitt -Vocals/Bass and Mitchell Metz - Vocals/Violin

Aug 25    Bronwen Dickey Presentation and Book Signing

The Jackson County Public Library and City Lights Bookstore are partnering in a presentation and book signing with Bronwen Dickey on Thursday, August 25th at 7 p.m. The presentation will be in the Community Room of the Jackson County Public Library. Dickey will discuss her book, Pit Bull: The Battle Over an American Icon which examines the history and myths of the breed. Hal Herzog, WCU professor, and author Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat, said about Pit Bull, "This is one of best dog books you will ever read. But, it is also about the big stuff – the moral status of animals, the science of nature and nurture, the role of race in our culture. In Pit Bull, Bronwen Dickey weaves a tale in which the most divisive of animal issues becomes a metaphor for deep-seated conflicts in American society." Publishers Weekly added, "[Dickey] illuminates many of the facts and exposes many of the myths surrounding pit bulls and dogs in general... Dickey's immersive and illuminating work deserves a wide audience."

Bronwen Dickey is a contributing editor at The Oxford American. Her writing has also appeared inThe New York Times, The Virginia Quarterly Review, Newsweek, Outside, Popular Mechanics, Best American Travel Writing 2009, Slate, Garden & Gun, The San Francisco Chronicle, Southern Living, World Hum, Sport Diver, and The Independent Weekly, among other publications. In 2009 she received a first-place Lowell Thomas Award in travel journalism and a residency grant from the MacDowell Colony. She lives in North Carolina.

Aug 26    Workplace Violence: Risk Analysis, Prevention and Response
Overview
This half-day workshop will focus on educating participants on the rates and types of crimes occurring in the workplace with a primary focus on workplace safety training for managing assaultive behavior. While it’s not 100% preventable, and in some cases even expected, workplace violence can be mitigated through environmental design, awareness, education and proactive, frequent training.

It’s important to know the business industry itself can undergo physical, emotional, and financial suffering when workplace violence occurs. Liability risks are associated with providing a safe work environment, so senior level administrators, business owners and employees are all encouraged to attend this workshop.

In this workshop, participants will learn about the four primary categories of workplace violence including:
• Acts of violence between employees
• Violent acts initiated from customers or clients
• Violent attacks from criminal perpetrators that have no legitimate relationship to the business or its employees (most common)
• Domestic violence that spills over into the workplace
In addition to a lecture format, participants will learn how to analyze the risks and respond to violence in the workplace through role playing, simulations, and drills.

Sylva’s own Mountain Faith returns to Concerts on the Creek on Friday, August 26 from

The award-nominated band from Sylva, North Carolina – rehearses between customers
