Jun 2    Concert at the Jackson County Library Featuring Singer/Songwriter Heidi Holton
The Jackson County Public Library is hosting a musical concert featuring singer-songwriter Heidi Holton on Thursday June 2nd at 7 PM in the Community Room. This program is free of charge.

Heidi Holton is turning heads with her unique take on one of America’s oldest popular musical traditions. At once authentic and yet utterly new, her take on blues standards such as Baby Please Don’t Go and Statesboro Blues is nothing short of a revelation. Her tasteful originals shine just as brightly, seemingly both familiar and fresh.

Heidi Holton began young, leaving Murphy, North Carolina to play in rock bands in Athens, GA and New Orleans, before the blues called and she answered. She studied under the great Jorma Kaukonen and then disappeared to Alaska’s arctic interior to perfect her craft. She has recently moved back to Murphy, North Carolina and is touring around the Southeast.

This program is free and open to the public. The event is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Jackson County Public Library. For more information, please call the library at (828) 586-2016. The Jackson County Public Library is a member of Fontana Regional Library (www.fontanalib.org).

Vision & Vistas: Great Smoky Mountains

APRIL 18 - SEPTEMBER 23

Great Smoky Mountains: Vision & Vistas is and exhibition of sixty original photographs and drawings made by photographers and artists inspired by the grand vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains. Professional photographers include such notables as Jim Thompson, George Masa, and George Grant, as well as amateurs who hiked with the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. Herbert Pelton and Nace Brock created images used by Asheville promoters to advocate for a national park in the Appalachians. Working for the National Park Service, Hiram Wilburn and Charles Grossman documented mountain culture within park boundaries and the road construction projects that forever altered it. Irving Fromer, J.D. Chaffin, and Alan Youngblood, men enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps, made pencil sketches of a wilderness previously unknown to them. Together, these artists focused on the grandeur of the landscape to lobby for a national park and promote conservation in the southern U.S. Without their vision, perhaps the Great Smoky Mountains National Park would not have come into being. Since its inception, the park has been a popular destination, setting visitation records topping 10 million annually

Jun 17    Elemental

Elemental : conversations in art and poetry is an exhibition exploring the relationship between the written word and visual art with a focus on the four classical earthly elements. This exhibition features objects from the WCU Fine Art Museum’s collection that express the classical elements of earth, air, fire and water such as Robert Godfrey’s “Rekindling Fire”, Don Reitz’s “Geode Form” and Shan Goshorn’s “Pawnee Woman in a Field from the Earth Renewal Series ”.

In an ekphrastic response to these objects, creative writers in residence for the Cullowhee Mountain Arts 2016 Summer Arts Series have created a rich literary experience for visitors to the exhibition. Their poems and short stories will be exhibited alongside the artwork that inspired them.

Jun 17    Handmade Landscape

Camp Little Hope is a team of artists. With a combined background in fine arts, education, design, economics, engineering, anthropology and community engagement, they imagine new worlds through public artworks, curatorial interventions, designed artifacts, published information, and catalyzed epiphanies.
Camp Little Hope presents, Handmade Landscape, an arts and research exhibition exploring the geography, botany, and the impact of recent human land use on Gribble Gap. The research presented in the exhibit informed the creation of Dirtmaker, and environmental sculpture installed on the campus trail system. As Dirtmaker disappears, it replenishes the depleted minerals in the forest’s soil.
This project is sponsored by the WCU Sustainable Energy Initiative, a student driven, student supported fee.

Event Title: Blackboard LMS Maintenance

Event Details: Blackboard Managed Hosting Services will perform an upgrade to the Blackboard Learn application. While the work is being done, there will be no access to the Blackboard learning management system or the courses stored in the system. The upgrade is being done to add some new functionality such as: improving the navigation within Discussion Boards between threads. There are also some patches that will improve the overall functionality of the environment.

DATE CHANGE: Due to the logistics of trying to perform an upgrade the week before classes start in the fall and what this means to the faculty and students at WCU, we have changed the upgrade outage dates/times so that we affect the least number of users and are able to perform the upgrade as efficiently as possible. The new dates/times are below.

STARTING: Friday, June 17, 2016 – 5:00 PM

ENDING: Saturday, June 18, 2016 – 5:00 PM

Jun 17    Concerts on the Creek 2016- Whitewater Bluegrass Company
The phenomenal Whitewater Bluegrass Company will return to the Concerts on the Creek stage at the Bridge Park gazebo in Sylva, N.C. on Friday, June 17 from 7-9 p.m.

For over 25 years The Whitewater Bluegrass Company has captivated audiences throughout the southeast with their blend of bluegrass music, country ballads, mountain swing and down-home humor. With Whitewater, mountain culture is a celebration of music, song and dance.

Audience involvement is a priority for any Whitewater performance. With true Southern charm and manners Whitewater's MC, square-dance caller and bass man, "Uncle Ted" White, will have everyone dancing and following calls. The driving rhythm of Bill Byerly's Martin guitar provides the backdrop against which the melody of sound is woven. Bill has been a veteran of the Asheville music scene for over 30 years. Mandolin player David Pendley's distinct chop, paired with impeccable timing, ear for harmony and lead singing adds to the drive of Whitewater's accent. Steve Sutton, on banjo, has had a vast and varied career. He cut his musical teeth working for Raymond Fairchild in Maggie Valley and went directly from there to working with the King of Bluegrass, Mr. Good & Country, Jimmy Martin. He has helped Rhonda Vincent create her sound with The Rage and most recently worked with Alicia Nugent. Steve is an International Bluegrass Music Award (IBMA) winner as well as a Grammy nominated artist. His machine-gun delivery with the banjo will leave you wanting more. Newest Whitewater member Danielle Bishop has already made a name for herself in bluegrass. Winning fiddle awards in her youth, including the prestigious Galax and Fiddler's Grove Conventions, this 18-year old phenom plays and sings with the feeling and taste of a seasoned road veteran.

Concerts on the Creek are held every Friday from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 7-9 p.m., at the Bridge Park gazebo stage in Sylva.

The Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series.

These events are free and open to the public with donations encouraged. Bring a chair or blanket.

Concerts on the Creek is a Blue Ridge Music Trail partner.

Jun 25    Julia Franks Reading and Book Signing

Julia Franks read from her novel on Saturday, June 25th at 6:30 p.m.at City Lights Bookstore.  In Over the Plain Houses, it's 1939, and the federal government has sent Virginia Furman, a USDA agent, into the North Carolina mountains to instruct families how to modernize their homes and farms. There she meets farm wife Irene Lambey, who is immediately drawn to the lady agent's self-possession. Already, cracks are emerging in Irene's fragile marriage to Brodis, an ex-logger turned fundamentalist preacher: she has taken to night ramblings through the woods to escape her husband's bed, storing strange keepsakes in a mountain crevice. To Brodis, these are all the signs that Irene, tiptoeing through the dark in her billowing white nightshirt has become a witch.

Julia Franks has roots in the Appalachian Mountains and has spent years kayaking the rivers and creeks of Tennessee, North Carolina, and West Virginia. She lives in Atlanta, where she teaches literature. To reserve copies of Over the Plain Houses please call City Lights Bookstore at 828-586-9499.

Jun 29    Honeycutters

UC Lawn (Rain Location: UC Grand Room)
FREE Concert!

  • The Honeycutters are an Asheville, NC-based original country roots band. Led by songwriter Amanda Anne Platt, The Honeycutters include Tal Taylor on mandolin, Rick Cooper on bass, Josh Milligan on drums, and Matt Smith rounds out the band on pedal steel, electric guitar, and dobro to create a sound that carries just as well across the bar room as in a church or a theater. With songs that are honest and relatable, part chagrin and part hope, Platt’s voice carries a timeless appeal.  Music City Roots’ Craig Havighurst calls The Honeycutters “… just superb, with a sweet toned and melodious aura… Today’s Smoky Mountain area modern folk thing does have a certain vibe, and these guys are among its finest purveyors.” Folk Music About.com’s Kim Ruehl wrote, “Their music embodies a very catchy, accessible, optimistic sort of spirit so frequently lacking in folk circles (where brooding, hyper-analytical music reigns supreme). What’s more, like Carolina Story, they’re a great band replete with tasty harmonies.”
  • Notable appearances at MerleFest, Suwannee Springfest, Strawberry Music Festival, Vancouver Island Music Fest, Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Folk Alliance, Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Fest and the Nelsonville Music Festival. They have also performed alongside esteemed musicians Guy Clark, Tony Rice, The Seldom Scene, Billy Joe Shaver, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Amy Ray, Donna the Buffalo, Jill Andrews, and The Steep Canyon Rangers.
