Lisa Horstman will visit City Lights Bookstore for a special storytime on Saturday, August 1st at 11 a.m. She will read from her new book published by the Great Smoky Mountain Association, Sabrina. Her book tells the story of a brave young flying squirrel who is trying to fit in with her new family of red squirrels. When she saves the day, her new friends realize it is ok the be a little different.


Lisa is also the author of the popular books, The Great Smoky Mountain Salamander Ball  and The Troublesome Cub.

Ginseng Production - Aug 4th 10 - 11:30 am

The Fontana Regional Library and the NCSU Extension Service is offering a free seminar on Ginseng Production for homeowners who desire to grow “sang.” Topics covered will be: state regulations for growing and hunting "sang", plant physiology, present and historical use of ginseng and comparing Asian versus American ginseng. Major time and emphasis of the program will be dedicated to the woods simulated cultural practices such as: site selection and preparation, sowing, harvesting and drying the roots and seed stratification.
 
This Seminar will be held August 4th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. at the Cashiers Library on Frank Allen Rd, Cashiers, NC. The topic for the August 4, 2015 Tuesdays to Thrive is Back to School - Healthy  Kids and Families.  Local healthy kids advocates to share tips for packing healthy lunches and what resources we have in our community to supportt this.  WestCare Health System and the Jackson County Department of Public Health collaborate to sponsor a monthly health and wellness series called Tuesdays to Thrive.  The series is offered on the first Tuesday of each month from 6-7 pm in the WestCare lobby.   The series features timely health topics through a whole-body approach.  The series will be held at WestCare hospital.  Door prizes and food will be provided.

LEP Educators Workshop is for School Teachers, Camp Counselors, Extension Agents, Environmental Educators and anyone who wants to educate the next generation about conservation steward-ship and land ethics.

The Leopold Education Project (LEP) is an innovative, interdisciplinary conservation ethics curriculum targeted for grades 6-12. The goal of the program is to create an ecologically literate citizenry.

Aug 8    Growing Up in Appalachia

On Saturday, August 8th at 3 p.m. Wilford Corbin will present his book, The Boys of Battle Branch at City Lights Bookstore. The Boys of Battle Branch is a collection of short nonfiction pieces which relates the experiences of Corbin who grew up in Macon County during the middle of the twentieth century.  The reader will find these stories to be delightfully quaint, sometimes touching and often humorous.

As we slowly move from the summer into autumn, many gardeners will navigate varying options of putting their garden to bed, saving seeds and or planting with cool season vegetables for round 2! The N.C. Cooperative Extension Service is offering a free seminar on tips for “putting your garden to bed,” or extending the growing season with topics which include: cultivar selection, multiple cropping, mulches, low and high tunnels, cold frames and more!  In addition, individuals will learn the basics in seed selection, harvesting, processing and how to store your valuable vegetable seeds.  
This informative seminar will be held August 11th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the Jackson Extension Center on 538 Scotts Creek Rd. Sylva, N.C. in room 234. Jackson County Genealogical Society August Program
 
“Paradise Found, Lost, and Found” is the name of the Jackson County Genealogical Society’s August program.  Don Casada will discuss population distribution and growth patterns in the former Buncombe, Haywood, Macon and Jackson – and now Swain County – portion of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Anecdotes will be provided about individuals and families, including place names related to those who once called lands now embraced by the Park their home.
 
The program will be in the Community Room of the historic Jackson County Courthouse on Thursday, August 13, at 7 pm.  All JCGS events are free of charge and the public is welcome.  For more information call 631-2646.

Help us celebrate the birthday of our friend and musician, Lee Knight onTuesday, August 18th at 7 p.m. He said all he wanted to do was spend his birthday paddling and making music at City Lights Bookstore and we are more than happy to help him with his birthday wish. Lee currently works as a folk singer, storyteller and outdoor leader, performing at concerts, workshops, Elderhostels, festivals, camps and schools. He leads hikes, canoe trips and guides whitewater rafts. He plays various instruments, including the five-string banjo, various guitars, the Appalachian dulcimer, the mouth bow, the Cherokee flute and the Cherokee rattle, as well as the Native American drum. The Coffee with the Poet series continues on Thursday, August 20th at 10:30 a.m. and will feature Asheville poet, Pasckie Pascua. He will read selections from his book,Red is the Color of My Night. The poems and prose in Red is the Color of My Night reflect the often ragged but mostly warm wisdom of a journeyman who witnessed and experience a life that defies his reserved demeanor and inviting smile.

Aug 22    Meet the Cats
WCU Athletics invites you to join us at E.J. Whitmire Stadium on Saturday, August 22nd from 3-5 PM.  This day marks the final home football scrimmage of fall practices and the start of an exciting year for Catamount Football and Catamount Athletics. 
 
The event is free and open to the public.  The first 1,500 fans through Gate 1 will receive free ice cream courtesy of Aramark.  Each fan through the gate will receive a raffle ticket to be redeemed for their ice cream at the main concession stand on the west concourse.
 
During the scrimmage, student-athletes from various WCU teams will be on the west concourse competing against our fans in interactive games like corn hole, volleyball, and mini-golf just to name a few.  Catamount sponsors will be there passing out promotional items and information.  Be sure to stick around at the conclusion of the scrimmage to hear a few words from Coach Speir and meet your 2015 Catamount Football team.  The team will be available to sign autographs and take photos with fans in the west concourse of the stadium following the scrimmage.
 
Fans will be able to pick up their fall sports schedule posters, schedule cards, and interact with our student-athletes. Bring the family out and help us kick off the 2015 Fall Sports season right with Meet the Cats!
 
The Catamount volleyball team will be scrimmaging that day as well.  The scrimmage is from 1-3 pm in the Ramsey Center and is also a free event that is open to the public.

Aug 29    Cashiers Trail Mix Trail and Adventure Run
The Cashiers Trail Mix features a 5 mile competitive trail run over diverse terrain or a 3.1762 mile team adventure run including obstacles, mud, and much more! The athlete may sign up for one or both events and must have a team of four for the adventure run.
The mountain trail run and adventure run will take place within the 2,000 acre private community of Chinquapin and will feature more than 400 feet in varying elevation changes with a start and finish at 4,200 feet. Along with the stunning scenery, runners registered for the trail run will enjoy multiple bridge and creek crossings on a wooded trail system winding through the raw and natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Participants in the adventure race will enjoy the same scenery while being challenged both physically and mentally to overcome obstacles using the help of their teammates. Be prepared to get muddy!

The Balsam-Willets-Ochre Hill Volunteer Fire Department is hosting their open house, BBQ dinner and free concert. Aug 31    Introduction to Blown Glass Vessels and Hot Glass Sculpting - JCGEP
