Apr 11    Jim Hartbarger Reading & Signing
Jim Hartbarger will read from his new memoir On the Rim of the Basket: The Memoirs of Coach Jim Hartbarger on Saturday, April 11th at 3:00 p.m.  The memoir recounts his early childhood days, coaching high school and college basketball teams, owning the Jarrett House and his advice to others about recruitment and coaching.  Wilson Scott, a former Western Carolina University basketball player said, “Coach Jim was tough, but fair. First on his list was getting an education. He didn’t accept any excuse.  I have a great deal of respect for him.”  Hartbarger was the head basketball coach at WCU from 1969-1975 and captured twoNational Association of Intercollegiate Athletic District 6 regular season titles and one tournament championship. His team advanced to the 1972 NAIA Championship Tournament.  In 1975, Jim and his wife Jean became the owners of The Jarrett House, a Southern Bed and Breakfast in Dillsboro, North Carolina.  Following the reading, Hartbarger will be signing and copies will be available for purchase.  To reserve copies of his memoir please call City Lights at 828-586-9499.

Apr 28    Resistance
Resistance Synopsis: When scientists in the mid-20th century developed the means to mass-produce antibiotics, it was a medical miracle. Only now are we realizing the potentially catastrophic implications of this innovation. Have we reached a point where we must save antibiotics in order to save ourselves? Resistance explores the global pandemic of antibiotic-resistant infection – what’s causing it and what’s being done to combat it. Current debates over antibiotic use in human medicine and animal farming take center stage as the film follows patients, healthcare providers, and farmers who’ve confronted resistant infections first hand; and microbiologists and medical doctors who’re working to develop new solutions to the problem. Their stories are joined with insights from writers, public officials, and politicians to explain the past present and future of antibiotics and why their ineffectiveness is one of the greatest threats modern humanity has ever faced.
