Events for March 2015
Jackson County Chamber & Visitor Center
Feb 27 - Mar 1    WinterFest Smoky Style

Excitement is building for WinterFest Smoky Style, an inaugural event planned for Feb. 27-March 1 that will feature many things "canine," including sled dog demos, a weight pull and police dog demonstrations.

The Haywood Community College nationally ranked Timbersports team will be at the festival, as will the cast of “Hillbilly Blood,” a reality show filmed in an around Haywood County that was recently picked up by the Discovery channel.

Vendors are still being accepted for the outdoor festival, and the fee is only $25. Those with informational booths can set up at no charge during the festival being held at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. Vendors interested in staying around for Sunday events can do so at no extra cost.

All potential vendors must sign up, however, so spots can be assigned. Learn more at http://winterfestsmokystyle.com or check out the event Facebook page.

WinterFest Smoky Style is being planned during a time when not much is going on in Haywood County. About a dozen mushers are expected to be on hand with their sled dogs for an exhibition, and there will be a sanctioned competition with the International Weight Pull Association (IWPA), a nonprofit association that promotes the sport of dog pulling.

Plott hounds and police dogs will round out the other canine-related events.

There will be demonstrations and exhibitions running simultaneously at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, and the cast members of "Hillbilly Blood" will have special presentations throughout the day.

There will be a dinner and brief program on Friday and Saturday night at the Maggie Valley Inn where attendees can mingle with owners of the special breeds of work dogs. Tickets for the full buffet are $15 per night.

Mar 6    David Joy Presents His Debut Novel
Webster author, David Joy will present his new novel on Friday, March 6th at 6:30 p.m. at City Lights Bookstore.  Where All Light Tends to Go, a staff pick of both Chris and Eon, is set in Jackson County and tells the story of Jacob McNeely, a young man who is in a fight against his fate. “Expertly balancing beauty and brutality, David has written a novel that stays with the reader long after the final page has been read.  Where All Light Tends to Go, though very much an Appalachian tale, is the story common to many young men who are trying to escape their desperate circumstances,” says City Lights staffer, Eon Alden. Ron Rash had this to say about the book, “A savage and moving account of a young man’s attempt to transcend his family’s legacy of violence. Where All Light Tends to Go is an outstanding debut and a fine addition to the country-noir vein of southern literature.” To help celebrate Innovation Brewing has brewed a special Where All Light Tends to Go Stout. We will have free samples available during the reading at the bookstore and following there will be an afterparty at Innovation to continue the celebration.  David Joy's stories and creative nonfiction have appeared in Drafthorse Literary Journal, Smoky Mountain Living, Wilderness House Literary Review, Pisgah Review, and Flycatcher, and he is the author of the memoir Growing Gills: A Fly Fisherman's Journey.

Mar 17    This Ain't No Mouse Music
This Ain’t No Mouse Music! Synopsis: Roots music icon Chris Strachwitz is a detective of sounds, an archaeologist of deep American music, the antithesis of the corporate ‘mouse music’ that dominates the American ear. Born a German count, Strachwitz fled his homeland after WWII at 16. In the United States he discovered, and shared, a musical landscape that most Americans missed. For the last fifty years, he has carried his tape recorder from sharecrop shacks to roadside honkytonks, from cantina dives to wild Blues clubs. His recordings on his independent label, Arhoolie Records, introduced Cajun music from Louisiana, Tex-Mex from Texas, and Blues from the country into the living rooms of the world. These recordings revolutionized the sound of music around the world. In This Ain’t No Mouse Music! filmmakers Chris Simon and Maureen Gosling join Strachwitz for a hip-shaking stomp from New Orleans to Texas, Cajun country to Appalachia, as he continues his passionate quest for the musical soul of America. Features: Chris Strachwitz, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Flaco Jimenez, Michael Doucet, Richard Thompson, Santiago Jimenez, Jr., The Pine Leaf Boys, the Treme Brass Band, No Speed Limit, and others.

Mar 29    Jamie Kornegay Presents His Debut Novel

Mississippi author, Jamie Kornegay will visit City Lights Bookstore onSunday, March 29th at 1 p.m. to present his debut novel. Soil, a  City Lights staff pick, is a look at Jay Mize’s descent into madness. “An environmental scientist, Jay believes he can revolutionize sustainable farming. What starts out as a dedicated but light-hearted obsession with composting leads him to moving his wife and son to a rural riverside farmstead in the Mississippi delta. It is not long though before it all begins to unravel for Jay. Soil is a great read, set at a furious pace that does not end until the final page. Forget the great plot and pace, Kornegay’s writing style makes this book hard to put down,” says City Lights staffer, Eon Alden.

Jamie Kornegay lives in the Mississippi Delta, where he moved in 2006 to establish an independent bookstore, Turnrow Book Co. Before that he was a bookseller, events

coordinator, and radio show producer at the famous Square Books in Oxford, MS. He studied creative fiction under Barry Hannah at the University of Mississippi.

Mar 29    Spring Choral Concert
Our final program in this year's Artist-in-Residence Orchestral series features works for chorus and orchestra by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Dr. Michael Lancaster conducts the Concert Choir and University Chorus, which will be joined by the Western Carolina Community Chorus and their director, Bob Holquist. The School of Music's Artist-in-Residence program brings professional string musicians from the Asheville Symphony Orchestra to perform orchestral masterworks and chamber music with Western's woodwind, brass, and percussion students. The program also supports hiring strings for choral programs, small operas, chamber music with faculty--even a live radio show! Although the vast majority of the 150+ programs the School of Music presents in a year are free to the public, we do charge admission for these orchestral concerts to help cover costs of rehearsal, rental of the hall, purchase of music, and other expenses. Thank you for your understanding and support troughout the year!
