Events for November 2015
Jackson County Chamber & Visitor Center
Nov 1    Resident Alien

The School of Stage and Screen will present a staged reading of Resident Alien, a new musical by Katya Stanislavskya, Director of WCU’s Musical Theatre Program.  The reading will be directed by Terrence Mann, Broadway Star and Endowed Chair of WCU’s Musical Theatre program.

Resident Alien will be the inaugural production of Stage and Screen’s brand new Niggli Series, which seeks to develop and showcase new plays and musicals for the American stage.  The reading will feature both student and faculty actors, including the first lady of WCU, Susan Belcher.

Resident Alien is a fictional story of Sasha, Sveta, and Nastya Berdichevsky, who were part of the third wave of Russian/Soviet immigration in the 1990’s.   A professor stuck in the past, a musician willing to adapt, and a teenager whose culture shock coincides with her coming-of-age, the Berdichevsky’s represent the full spectrum of the successes and failures of the immigrant experience.  Resident Alien is about the personal choices every “alien” faces in a new world: which parts of him/herself to retain, and which to jettison in order to succeed.

Nov 11    Frame by Frame
When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, taking a photo was a crime. After the regime fell from power in 2001, a fledgling free press emerged and a photography revolution was born. Now, as foreign troops and media withdraw, Afghanistan is left to stand on its own, and so are its journalists. Set in a modern Afghanistan bursting with color and character, FRAME BY FRAME follows four Afghan photojournalists as they navigate an emerging and dangerous media landscape – reframing Afghanistan for the world, and for them. Through cinema vérité, intimate interviews, powerful photojournalism, and never-before-seen archival footage shot in secret during the Taliban regime, the film connects audiences with four humans in the pursuit of the truth. – Touring Filmmaker(s): Alexandria Bombach & Mo Scarpelli Cost: FREE

Nov 21    George Singleton?s New Short Story Collection
George Singleton will visit City Lights Bookstore to present his new collection of stories on Saturday, November 21st at 3 p.m. Calloustown, Singleton’s seventh collection, finds the author at the top of his game as he traces the unlikely inhabitants of the fictional Calloustown in all their humanity. Whether exploring family, religion, politics, or the true meaning of home, these stories range from deeply affecting to wildly absurd and back again in the blink of an eye. Tom Franklin, author ofCrooked Letter, Crooked Letter, said, “If you read only one book this year, make it Calloustown. George Singleton is the best kind of genius, a mad one, and while his stories are acts of mad genius, they are also acts of great skill, acts of great compassion, acts of great intelligence. These are stories not to be missed.”

Nov 21    Jimmy Guignard Examines Rural Landscape Transformation

Professor and cyclist, Jimmy Guignard will present his book,Pedaling the Sacrifice Zone at City Lights Bookstore on Saturday, November 21st at 6:30 p.m. Living on 7 acres above the Marcellus Shale – an active gas play in Pennsylvania, Jimmy Guignard has witnessed the gradual transformation of the rural landscape his family calls home into an industrial sacrifice zone. In his new bookPedaling the Sacrifice Zone: Teaching, Writing, and Living above the Marcellus Shale, the English professor and experienced cyclist grapples with the meaning of place and the power of words. From the vantage point of a cyclist, Guignard tracks the takeover, pedaling thousands of miles through Tioga and surrounding counties, where he encounters increased truck traffic, crosses pipeline construction on trails and passes a growing number of flaring gas wells.  Juggling his roles as disinterested professor, anxious father and citizen and reluctant activist, Guignard reveals how the rhetoric of industry, politicians and locals reshaped his understanding of teaching and his faith in the force of language.
