Feb 17    Private Violence
Private Violence is a feature-length documentary film and audience engagement campaign that explores a simple, but deeply disturbing fact of American life: the most dangerous place for a woman in America is her own home. Every day in the US, at least four women are murdered by abusive (and often ex) partners. The knee-jerk response is to ask, "Why doesn’t she just leave?" Private Violence shatters the brutality of this logic. Through the eyes of two survivors, we bear witness to the complicated and complex realities of intimate partner violence. As a victim transforms to survivor, Private Violence begins to shape powerful new questions that hold the potential to change our society: “Why does he abuse?", "Why do we turn away?" and "How do we begin to build a future without domestic violence?"

Feb 17    Orchestra Concert: Tchaikovsky 4th
Our second program in this year's Artist-in-Residence Orchestral series features Dr. William Martin singing favorite operatic arias, with Daniel Meyer, conducting. Also on the program are Weber's Overture to Der Freischutz and Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony. The School of Music's Artist-in-Residence program brings professional string musicians from the Asheville Symphony Orchestra to perform orchestral masterworks and chamber music with Western's woodwind, brass, and percussion students. The program also supports hiring strings for choral programs, small operas, chamber music with faculty--even a live radio show! Although the vast majority of the 150+ programs the School of Music presents in a year are free to the public, we do charge admission for these orchestral concerts to help cover costs of rehearsal, rental of the hall, purchase of music, and other expenses. Thank you for your understanding and support! Please plan on joining us for the rest of the series: Thursday 26 February: "Robin Hood," a live radio show, with music composed and conducted by Dr. Bruce Frazier. Sunday 29 March: Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams for chorus and orchestra, conducted by Dr. Michael Lancaster.

Feb 26    Radio Show: Robin Hood
Our third program in this year's Artist-in-Residence Orchestral series features Robin Hood: a live radio show with original music composed and conducted by Dr. Bruce Frazier. Prior to the show itself, the audience will enjoy a short program of swashbuckling orchestral music! Please plan on joining us for the rest of the series: Sunday 29 March: Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams for chorus and orchestra, conducted by Dr. Michael Lancaster.

Feb 27 - Mar 1    WinterFest Smoky Style

Excitement is building for WinterFest Smoky Style, an inaugural event planned for Feb. 27-March 1 that will feature many things "canine," including sled dog demos, a weight pull and police dog demonstrations.

The Haywood Community College nationally ranked Timbersports team will be at the festival, as will the cast of “Hillbilly Blood,” a reality show filmed in an around Haywood County that was recently picked up by the Discovery channel.

Vendors are still being accepted for the outdoor festival, and the fee is only $25. Those with informational booths can set up at no charge during the festival being held at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. Vendors interested in staying around for Sunday events can do so at no extra cost.

All potential vendors must sign up, however, so spots can be assigned. Learn more at http://winterfestsmokystyle.com or check out the event Facebook page.

WinterFest Smoky Style is being planned during a time when not much is going on in Haywood County. About a dozen mushers are expected to be on hand with their sled dogs for an exhibition, and there will be a sanctioned competition with the International Weight Pull Association (IWPA), a nonprofit association that promotes the sport of dog pulling.

Plott hounds and police dogs will round out the other canine-related events.

There will be demonstrations and exhibitions running simultaneously at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, and the cast members of "Hillbilly Blood" will have special presentations throughout the day.

There will be a dinner and brief program on Friday and Saturday night at the Maggie Valley Inn where attendees can mingle with owners of the special breeds of work dogs. Tickets for the full buffet are $15 per night.

Calling all photo buffs

Part of the WinterFest Smoky Style celebration will include photography seminars and a guided winter shoot.

Participants may submit up to three images in three categories — Landscape, Landscape with People, and Festival Activities. There is a $10 per photo entry fee. Cash and product awards will be provided for the first, second and third places. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Haywood County Animal Shelter after expenses. A photo contest DVD will be available of the best and most interesting of the images submitted.
