Oct 4    Vincent van Gogh: Theologian with a Brush

Charles Davidson will visit City Lights Bookstore on Saturday, October 4th at 3 p.m. to present his book, Bone Dead, and Rising: Vincent van Gogh and the Self Before God. School children know of the famous painter’s severed earlobe. Adults know that his paintings have sold for the highest prices ever paid for original art. Artists know that his expressionism bridged nineteenth century impressionism and twentieth century modernism. Readers of his letters know that his life was filled with conflict, suffering, and defeat, and yet with a singular and passionate commitment to his vocation as an artist. But what do we know of Vincent as a theologian with a brush? This illustrated presentation will examine lesser-known aspects of Vincent’s life and sacred dimensions of his spiritually visionary art.

Charles Davidson, a Presbyterian minister and psychotherapist, was the Darrel Rollins Professor of Holistic Ministry in Pastoral Theology Care and Counseling at Virginia University of Lynchburg, until retiring to Black Mountain, NC where he lives with his wife, dog, cats, saxophone and clarinet.

Oct 16    Coffee with the Poet Featuring Wesley Satterwhite

The Coffee with the Poet series continues on Thursday, October 16th at 10:30 a.m. at City Lights Bookstore.  The October gathering will feature Wesley Satterwhite.  Wesley Satterwhite is a student in the Master of Arts in Writing program at the Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative at Lenoir Rhyne University in Asheville and a co-founder of the City Lights Writing Group. Her poetry has been published in Kakalak and in WNC Woman magazine, where she was nearly rejected because the editors said they only publish work written by women. As a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor with a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Psychology and Counseling from UNC-Chapel Hill, Wesley is interested in the healing power of telling our stories. As a working mother of two little girls, she is interested in the exquisite beauty of ordinary life. Wesley will be reading from her own work and the work of others whose art lies at the intersection of these two interests.

Oct 21    Stay Then Go
As Stay Then Go begins, Marion (Janel Moloney, The West Wing) awaits her only son Eddie (rising British star Matt Kane, The Last of Robin Hood) in the Emergency Room after a rollerblading tumble. Marion has always taken charge with Eddie, been there to protect him no matter what. But today, as a series of unusual events keep her frustratingly isolated from him, she is left alone to try to comprehend the twists and turns that brought her to this juncture. Once, Marion had been a young mother deeply in love with her husband Dick (Nicholas Bishop, Body of Proof). But when Eddie received the dismaying diagnosis of autism, Marion's life suddenly veered in an unimagined direction. Determined to give her son the best possible chance, Marion transformed herself into a kind of 24-7 guide and interpreter for Eddie, mapping out step-by-step instructions for him to approach this beautiful, dangerous, and mysterious world and its routines that seemed to elude him. Unremitting, even obsessive, in her commitment to Eddie, who needed her so fully, she sacrificed almost everything else - her career, ultimately her marriage, and at times it seemed her every waking moment. But just as it seemed Eddie was finally turning a corner - becoming an artistically perceptive teenager grasping in his own way for independence - a sudden incident changed everything for mother and son. Now, as Marion waits in anxious limbo for Eddie, she begins to realize that after all these years of trying every which way to help her son, it is her son who can help her. In a reversal of everything she expected, it is Eddie pushing her to let go, while he heads into the terrifying, beautiful unknown of his own future.

New York Times Bestselling author Sharyn McCrumb will visit City Lights Bookstore for a reading and signing on Friday, October 24th at 6:30 p.m. She will read from her new novella, Nora Bonesteel’s Christmas Past. This new novella expands her Appalachian Ballad series with the return of Nora Bonesteel. Oct 30    Reception: Raymond & Oglander
David Raymond's Other People's Pictures and Eric Oglander: Craigslist Mirrors (Oct 30 - Jan 9) An internationally renowned artist, filmmaker, art collector and arts supporter, David Raymond presents a select sampling of his re-contextualized (and now) artful 'found' photographs that he has been carefully collecting in the US, South America and Europe for the past ten years. Visiting flea markets, thrift stores and searching on the Net, Raymond has amassed a growing collection of several thousand images. When viewed singularly or in 'curated' groupings, these seemingly cast-away and forlorn pictures take on new meaning and in a sense, are brought back to life. Eric Orlander has been collecting images of mirrors for sale on Craigslist for several years and more than 500 lo-res images will be featured that shed light on many aspects of this American life. Opening portals to other worlds, together these two shows merge the everyday and the overlooked with the highest aspirations of what 'art', found or intended, can offer.
