Sep 5    Jenny Bennett Returns with a New Novel

Sylva author, Jenny Bennett, returns to City Lights Bookstore on Friday, September 5th at 6:30 p.m. with her second book, The Twelve Streams of LeConte. The main character of the book lives in Sylva and there are scenes set in downtown, the library and even City Lights Bookstore. Anne Woodrow is on honeymoon in Scotland when fate gives her a slap in the face: right then and there, her new husband falls in love with another woman. Injured and grieving, she returns home alone and conceives of a project of renewal.  She will climb Mt. LeConte in the Smokies by way of the twelve streams that drain its slopes. Its a journey that will prove to be strenuous and dangerous. The Twelve Streams of LeConte brings together mirroring worlds of adventure tales and mountains.  It speaks the language of people who engage the landscape rather than admire it from a distance, and it unapologetically explores the life of a serious reader.

Jenny Bennett is also the author of Murder at the Jumpoff . Having hiked extensively in the area, she is well known in the Smokies hiking community for her blog, “Endless Streams and Forests.” To reserve copies of her books please call City Lights Bookstore at 828-586-9499.

Sep 11    Jackson County Genealogical Society Program - "Uncovering the Old Village....."

“Uncovering the Old Village Beneath Lake Glenville” is the name of the Jackson County Genealogical Society’s September program.  The speaker will be local historian and author, Carol Bryson.

Bryson will explain the research techniques used in creating her map, which shows the locations of pioneer settlements in Hamburg Village, later known as Glenville, from 1827 until the time the current dam was constructed in 1940.  Hamburg, once flourishing with churches, homes, stores, and other businesses, now lies beneath the waters of Lake Glenville.  A copy of the map is on display in the Jackson County Public Library.

Bryson will also discuss her recently published book, "Glenville and Cashiers … From The Records", written after more than 40 years of researching courthouse and archival records.

The program will be in the Community Room of the Historic Jackson County Courthouse on Thursday, September 11 at 7pm.  All JCGS events are free of charge and the public is welcome.  For more information call 631-2646.

Sep 15    Photo Editing Class - Jackson County Public Library

The Jackson County Public Library in Sylva will offer a free photo editing class on Monday, September 15th, at 5:45 p.m. The 90-minute class will be taught by retired WCU professor Roger Bacon, assisted by his wife Lisa Bacon and by library staffer Laura Chapman.

The Bacons will bring some pictures to illustrate examples of what can be done using GIMP. Participants are encouraged  to bring a jump drive with a few of their pictures. Following  is a list of topics to be covered: Downloading and installing GIMP 2.8, opening your pictures, cropping and resizing pictures, adjusting brightness and contrast, sharpening or softening, selecting part of a picture for further treatment, getting rid of “bad” spots, and using layer to enhance a picture. The class participants must have basic computer knowledge, such as keyboard and mouse skills.

The class will meet in the Library's computer lab and is limited to the first 16 participants to pre-register. (There is no fee.) Sep 16    Oil and Water
"Oil & Water" is the true story of two boys coming of age as they each confront one of the world's worst toxic disasters. Hugo and David were born on opposite ends of the oil pipeline. Hugo comes to America to fight for the survival of his Cofan tribe in the Ecuadorian Amazon, while David goes to Ecuador to launch the world's first company to certify oil as "fair trade." Their journeys lead them to explore what could be a more just future, not just for the Cofan, but for all people around the world who are born with oil beneath their feet. When Hugo Lucitante was 10 years old, his tribe made a desperate decision. Fearing extinction, they sent Hugo to be educated in the US, in hopes that he would return to lead them into a better future. A decade later, we follow Hugo as he returns to the Ecuadorian Amazon to meet his destiny, armed only with a high school diploma. David Poritz was just a sixth-grader when he learned of the oil disaster in Hugo???s homeland. With the blessing of his mother, David started a humanitarian project that led him away from his home in Amherst, Massachusetts to spend much of his youth in the Amazon. The two teenagers meet by chance during a shared canoe ride, and then again, when David offers to travel with Hugo to tour the damage cause by the 18 billion gallons of oil waste that was dumped on Hugo's ancestral lands. The area's people experience unexplainable rashes, childhood deformities and ballooning cancer rates. The film follows the boys back to the U.S. as their lives and the situation in Ecuador get more complicated. Can Hugo become the leader his tribe so desperately wants him to be? Will David clean up one of the world's dirtiest industries? Oil & Water is an intimate portrait of two young people finding their voices and trying to beat incredible odds. Eight years in the making, the film is an independent documentary funded by ITVS and MacArthur Foundation and made for broadcast on PBS.

Sep 23    Artist In Residence Concert #1
Our first program in this year's Artist-in-Residence Orchestral series features Dr. Brad Ulrich, trumpet, on Telemann's Sonata de Concert, with Daniel Meyer, conducting. Also on the program are Rossini's Barber of Seville Overture, Holst's St. Paul's Suite, and Haydn's Symphony No. 100, known as the "Military" Symphony. The School of Music's Artist-in-Residence program brings professional string musicians from the Asheville Symphony Orchestra to perform orchestral masterworks and chamber music with Western's woodwind, brass, and percussion students. The program also supports hiring strings for choral programs, small operas, chamber music with faculty--even a live radio show! Although the vast majority of the 150+ programs the School of Music presents in a year are free to the public, we do charge admission for these orchestral concerts to help cover costs of rehearsal, rental of the hall, purchase of music, and other expenses. Thank you for your understanding and support! Please plan on joining us for the rest of the series: Tuesday 17 February: Tchaikovsky Fourth Symphony and Dr. Bill Martin singing favorite opera arias, conducted by Daniel Meyer. Thursday 26 February: "Robin Hood," a live radio show, with music composed and conducted by Dr. Bruce Frazier. Sunday 29 March: Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams for chorus and orchestra, conducted by Dr. Michael Lancaster.

Sep 30    Faculty Recital: La Clarinette de Paris
Faculty clarinetist Shannon Thompson and pianist Lillian Buss Pearson perform an evening of music entitled "La Clarinette de Paris." Dr. Thompson visited Paris in June, and all the music in this concert is connected with that city and its musicians. The program features the most famous piece written for the Paris Conservatory's annual clarinet performance exams, Claude Debussy's Presiere Rhapsodie, along with works by Phillippe Gaubert and Ernest Chausson. Leser known works include a 1880 Sonata by Theodore Gouby that was admired by both Brahms and Berlioz. Also on the program is a set of four rare sight reading pieces, as well as Bug for solo clarinet composed by the Paris Conservatory's current director Bruno Mantovani. Shannon Thompson is Associate Professor of Music at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina, where she received the 2011 James E. Dooley Award for Excellence in Teaching Music. She has headed the clarinet studio at WCU since 1997. She is principal clarinetist of the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra and bass clarinetist of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Thompson has performed throughout the United States as a recitalist and chamber musician, and she has presented and performed at several International Clarinetfest Conferences and National and Regional College Music Society Conferences. Her doctoral treatise on the most significant American influences on clarinet playing entitled "A History and Analysis of the Philadelphia School of Clarinet Playing" is widely acclaimed. Dr. Thompson is currently developing a documentary film project "Chasing the Sound" focused on a community of clarinetists and clarinet equipment makers who strive to recreate the legendary sounds of their predecessors. Pianist Lillian Buss Pearson has appeared throughout the continental United States, England, Costa Rica and China as a soloist and collaborative artist. She is also certified as a teacher of the Alexander Technique. From 1988 to 2007, she was the head of the keyboard area at Western Carolina University, North Carolina. Her interest in historically informed performance practice has led her also to study harpsichord and fortepiano. Pearson's solo orchestral appearances include performances with the Jacksonville Symphony (FL), the Asheville Symphony (NC), the Breckenridge Festival Orchestra (CO), the Western Carolina Civic Orchestra (NC), the National Chamber Players (NC), and the Brandenburg Ensemble (FL). Dr. Pearson has served as an accompanist for many conferences and workshops, and she is also a certified as a teacher of the Alexander Technique.
