The first conference, Meeting the Challenge: Health and Education in Appalachia and Cherokee, will provide the educational foundation necessary to facilitate understanding of the multi-level social, historical, environmental, and structural determinants of under-represented ethnic minorities and disadvantaged background students.

Apr 8    The New Public
FREE / UC Theatre / with filmmaker Jyllian Gunther Public high school in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, where a third of residents live below the poverty line and the graduation rate is 40%. With infectious optimism, O'Brien and his staff of eight undertake a new and unconventional approach--emphasizing strong individual support and arts-based nontraditional instruction. Initially, the buzz from the community was that this was a dream come true. But conflicts arise when old realities surfaced. Filmed over four years, The New Public goes in and out of the classroom to follow the journey of students, parents and educators striving to reconcile idealism with reality and make a difference in the futures of young people whose lives are stark representations of our country's education and opportunity gaps. Through the prism of one inner-city school, we witness complexities faced by urban public schools and communities everywhere. Jyllian Gunter is an Emmy award-winning writer, producer, and director. Her critically acclaimed first documentary, "Pullout," was an official selection at numerous festivals. She won an Emmy for the PBS educational PSA series, "One Way." For NPR's "This American Life," she was reporter/co-producer on the episode 'Kid Politics.' She has worked for the past 15 years as a freelance producer/writer for WEtv, AMC, IFC Nickelodeon, Oxygen, The N, and more. There will be a Q&A with the filmmaker after the screening and a light refreshment reception after the Q&A.

The recital is FREE and will take place at 7:30 PM in the Music Recital Hall of the Coulter Building on the WCU campus. This program, entitled, "Hodgepodge" will feature works by Arthur Frackenpohl (Quintet No. 2), the World Premiere of Ovates and Coilltich, by Robert Kehrberg, Roaring 20's by Bill Holcombe, Brass Quintet by Alexey Posin, Adios Nonino by Astor Piazzolla, and Fly Me to the Moon, arranged by Jack Gale. Robert Kehrberg, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, composed Ovates and Coilltich to celebrate the 125th year anniversary of Western Carolina University which occurs in 2014. This piece garnered its inspiration from the early settlers and first nation people in the region of Western Carolina University. Ovates has a connection to Celtic literature as a bard. Coilltich is a Gaelic word for red warrior, both of which are loose associations. The opening of the work is Ovates and the second part Coilltich and references to themes themes are used throughout the opposition. The changing styles within the piece are inferences drawn from the composers knowledge of Western Carolina University's history.

Apr 10    Artist Talk: Remote Sites of War
Remote Sites of War: Skip Rohde and Christopher Sims Artist Talk BAC130 4-5pm (Followed by awards ceremony for Annual Juried Student Exhibition) Ongoing-armed conflicts involving the United States in some place in the world seem to have little effect on us-unless of course, we either have participated in them or know friends and families who have. Generally speaking though, the embodiment of war, what really happens on the battlegrounds or the behind-the-scenes activities are generally hidden from view. Artists Skip Rohde and Christopher Sims, veterans in their own right, present a worldview of war that is quietly revealing and poses as many questions for us to consider as it does answers. The artists don't take sides. Instead, they share their forthright observations from what they have experienced, were privy to, or have aimed to interject, each in different ways.

Apr 14    Civic Orchestra concert 7:30pm
On Monday, April 14th the Western Carolina Civic Orchestra presents its final concert for the year. The orchestra is a unique collaboration between the Western Carolina University School of Music and community members from Jackson, Swain, Macon, Buncombe, and Haywood counties. This ensemble embodies WCU's 2020 Vision with its emphasis on local and regional collaboration to improve the quality of life for faculty, staff, students, and the community. This concert showcases members from the orchestra and winners of the Western Carolina Civic Orchestra Solo Competition. The concert begins with the Haydn Horn Concerto No. 1 featuring first horn player Chris Caldwell. Chris is a graduate of WCU and also received his Master's degree in music from the University of Alabama. Andre Thacker was one of two winners in the Solo Competition. He is currently working on a Bachelor of Music in Education at WCU and is a tuba student of Michael Schallock. He will play the Arban Fantasie and Variations on the Carnival of Venice, normally played on trumpet but Andre's virtuosity will amaze you as he plays it on the tuba, lowest member of the brass family. Mary Wiedel, the other winner of the Solo Competition, is also a student at Western who is completing a Bachelor of Science in Communications degree. She will perform three songs from some of the great composers from the American Songbook: Jerome Kern, Frank Loesser, and Stephen Sondheim. The final part of the program features the Danish Folk Music Suite by the Australian musician Percy Grainger. Grainger was a pianist, composer, and arranger and probably best remembered for his setting of the folk dance tune "Country Gardens." The musicians of the orchestra include WCU students and faculty, as well as students and adults from surrounding counties. The group is sponsored by the WCU School of Music and a WCU Visiting Scholar Program Grant. It has also received a Grassroots Grant from the Jackson County Arts Council and is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The concert will begin at 7:30 pm, Monday, April 14th, in the Recital Hall of the Coulter Building. For more information please call the School of Music at 227-7242. Admission is free.

Apr 22    Faculty Recital: Ian Jeffress, saxophone
Saxophonist Ian Jeffress and pianist Lillian Pearson will present a recital at Western Carolina University on Tuesday, April 22 at 7:30 pm. The recital kicks off a year of celebration of the bicentennial of the birth of Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), the Belgian instrument maker and inventor of the saxophone. The program features a combination of new and historic works for saxophone, focusing on the instrument's chameleonic character. Jerome Savari's Fantasy on Themes from Freischutz borrows music from Carl Maria von Weber's groundbreaking Romantic opera in one of the earliest examples of solo music for the saxophone, while Stephen Lias's Five Characters from David Copperfield offers a modern, comical view of some of the most famous literary characters of the Victorian period. Other works featured on the program include Fernande Decruck's lush, impressionistic Sonata in C#, Giacinto Scelsi's Tre Pezzi, and Barry Cockcroft's Ku Ku. The concert begins at 7:30pm in the Recital Hall of the Coulter Building. For more information please call the School of Music at 227-7242. Admission is free.

Apr 27    The Fantasticks
The Fantasticks is the world's longest-running production of any kind, and with good reason: at the heart of its breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that trascends cultural barriers. The result is a timelesss fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time. It is a moving tale of young lovers who become disillusioned , only to discover a more mature, meaningful love. "Try to Remember" a time when this charming, romantic musical wasn't enchanting audiences around the world.
