The Watershed Association of the Tuckasegee River (WATR) is hosting a Picnic in the Park on June 20th from 11am to 2pm at Dillsboro's Monteith Park. The picnic is open to all-- stop by to learn more about WATR, share your interests and concerns about our watershed, check out newly-installed signs on the nature trail, and join a native plant walk with Bigelow's Botanical Excursions. There will also be a brief member vote on two amendments to our bylaws.
WATR will provide hotdogs and fixings. Feel free to bring a dish, side, or beverage to share if you’d like!
Want to get your feet wet? Come by an hour earlier at 10am to help pull invasive plants from the trails. Hope to see you there!

| There is hope for your clothes that have experienced misfortune. With creative mending, you can extend their usefulness while adding beauty. In this class, you bring clothes you want to repurpose. You will be introduced to information and shown examples. The group will discuss problem solving solutions and brainstorm possibilities for your garments. You will sketch out some ideas, and the instructor will assist you with your project. | Jun 27 An Appalachian Evening: The Kruger Brothers |
| Brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger were raised in an European family where music was an important part of life. The brothers leaned in to those musical influences and were performing regularly even before they were teenagers. Their professional career started as a duo, but in time, they teamed up with bass player Joel Landsberg, a native of New York City who also had a very extensive musical upbringing in classical and jazz music (studying with jazz great Milt Hinton). This trio that has been playing professionally together since 1995, moving to the United States in 2002. Sold out audiences are enamored with The Kruger Brothers’ creative infusion of classical into folk music, making them a fixture within the world of acoustic music. The Kruger Brothers personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition. Keeping the sound fresh, Kruger Brothers recently began taking mandolin player Jonah Horton along with them on tour. Horton’s former band, The Trailblazers, was 2018 Momentum Band of the Year, and he is known for his fresh take on traditional bluegrass. He is also an instructor for Kruger Academy. | Join friends and members of the Oconee Bell Chapter of the NC Native Plant Society at the Cashiers library meeting room to learn the intrigue of an error corrected in telling the history of Andre Michaux and his discovery of the Oconee Bells, Shortia galacifolia. The account of our most interesting local plant that appears in most published books and articles is simply wrong. After the talk we will move to the large shelter behind the Cashiers Rec Center, which we have booked for the last Tuesday each month from May through August. A native plant exchange and a green raffle will be held there on June 30, so bring your extra native plants and seedlings to raffle or exchange! |

| Western North Carolina-based outfit The Resonant Rogues finesse the line between country and soul. The keening of the fiddle and the sway of the pedal steel are classic sounds; the vocals — sung by Sparrow who fronts the band with her partner Keith Josiah Smith — are poetic and wistful, yet unfussy. Their sound encapsulates a moment; something as lovely as it is fleeting. Sparrow and Keith share a passion for movement and sound. Both traveled extensively throughout the U.S. — Keith by hopping freight trains, Sparrow with a circus troupe. When the two met by chance in Asheville 10 years ago, they combined their talents and The Resonant Rogues were born. While the band has explored musical styles from across genres and around the globe, current influences for Resonant Rogues, and especially their current album, are classic country, Appalachian old-time, and vintage soul. | The 2016 IBMA Fiddler and Female Vocalist and the 2018 IBMA Banjo Player have combined their musical wit and whimsy with the aim to entertain you in a bluegrass duo sort of way! Becky Buller has written songs for three Grammy award-winning albums by Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway; The Travelin’ McCourys; and the Infamous Stringdusters, as well as compositions for Bluegrass legends Rhonda Vincent, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and many more. The Becky Buller Band (of which Ned is a member) is a frequent guest on WSM’s Grand Ole Opry. Her album, Distance And Time, was a 2021 IBMA Album Of The Year award nominee. She is a 10-time IBMA award winner and records for the Dark Shadow Recording label. The new album, Jubilee, releases in May 2024. Becky also serves on the boards of the IBMA Foundation and the East Tennessee State University Alumni Association and teaches private music lessons from her home studio in Manchester, Tenn. Most importantly, she’s Jeff’s wife and Romy’s mama. Ned Luberecki was inducted into the Banjo Hall Of Fame in 2024! He is the 2023 IBMA Broadcaster Of The Year, so named for being one of our favorite voices on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio’s Bluegrass Junction, heading up Saturday’s “Derailed” show and “More Banjo Sunday”, which includes the ever-popular “Sunday Banjo Lesson”. He and the Bluegrass Junction team received a 2016 IBMA Distinguished Achievement award. Ned is an internationally recognized banjo guru: he teaches online lessons, has a series of banjo instructional videos with TrueFire and a series of books with Alfred Publishing. Ned is also the voice of the IBMA Award Show. He has two singles that are doing well on the radio airplay charts: “Back In Baltimore” and “Magrathea”; listen for them wherever you grab your music. | Jul 25 An Appalachian Evening: House of Hamill |
| Rose Baldino and Brian Buchanan first found themselves onstage together at the 2014 Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas City. Rose’s band Burning Bridget Cleary was scheduled to perform, but inclement weather prevented two of her bandmates from flying. Desperate to salvage the showcase, Rose approached Brian, who she knew fronted Canadian Celtic rock band Enter the Haggis. She thrust a guitar into Brian’s hands, pulled him onstage, and the two just clicked. Four years and hundreds of shows later, the duo was booked to play a closing slot at a Colorado festival, so they hired a bass player and drummer to fill out their sound. By the oddest of coincidences, their hired bandmates’ flights were canceled the day of the show. A frantic Facebook post introduced Brian and Rose to local musician Caroline Browning, who joined them on bass for the weekend. Once again, the chemistry was undeniable, and House of Hamill became a trio. Today, Pennsylvania-based House of Hamill is a fixture on festival stages across the US. They’ve shared their music and stories on the country’s premier folk stages. Their latest release, “Folk Hero,” captures perfectly the frenetic energy and eclecticism of their always engaging live show. this lively collection of original instrumentals, reimagined folk ballads, and new songs showcases the trio’s versatility. Whether they’re ripping through a set of original jigs and reels, adding lush three-part harmonies into traditional folk ballads, or cracking up an audience with stories from the road, House of Hamill puts on a show that captivates audiences from the very first note. | The piano rarely plays a prominent part in Appalachian or Americana music and is seldom the lead instrument. Jeff Little is an exception – and a remarkable one. His distinctive two-handed style, much influenced by the mountain flat-picked guitar tradition, is breathtaking in its speed, precision, and clarity. Jeff Little is an award-winning musician from the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Jeff, as well as his trio, stay busy traveling the country performing concerts with an energy and dedication to their music that is evident at every show. Performances include The Smithsonian Institution, The National Folk Festival, American Piano Masters, The Barns of Wolf Trap and many theatres, performing arts centers, and festivals. Jeff has been featured on National Public Radio and PBS many times and has also taken his music around the world for the US Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs performing in Sri Lanka, Bahrain, Pakistan, Oman, France and Tanzania. In 2014 Jeff was inducted into the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame. In addition, Jeff is Artist in Residence for the Popular Music Program at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC. Jeff is joined by Steve Lewis (guitar/banjo) who is one of the most respected acoustic musicians in the country. Steve is well known for his flat picking on guitar and his mastery of the five – string banjo. Steve has won many championships for his guitar and banjo playing. Some of the prestigious events include the Walnut Valley Nationals, Merlefest, the Galax Old Time Fiddlers Convention, Renofest and the Wayne Henderson Guitar Competition. In addition, Steve has won the national championship on acoustic guitar and is also a two-time national champion on the banjo. Jeff’s son, Luke Little (Mandolin), rounds out the trio. Luke Little is a very talented mandolin player who is recognized for his accomplished musicianship and style. Jeanette Williams, a celebrated bassist and vocalist, earned 19 SPBGMA finalist nominations, including 3 Female Vocalist of the Year awards. | During this class, you’ll learn each step of making sourdough bread, from start to finish. From feeding your starter that you'll keep and shaping your own loaf that you'll get to take home and bake later, to being able to see and feel "the crumb" as well as taste fresh baked sourdough. Tuition includes a sourdough starter kit which you keep, that has everything you'll need to continue baking at home except the Dutch oven. If you do not already have one we can add one to the cost of your tuition and have it ready for you to take home the day of class.
