The concert will include an early violin sonata of Beethoven (Op. 12, number 2, A major), the first violin sonata of Brahms (Op. 78, G major), and a short piece from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, arranged by Jascha Heifetz. Ginger Kowal is a native of Asheville and a founding member of the Opal String Quartet. She has been a member of the Asheville Symphony for 16 years. A high school graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy, she has performed as soloist with the Charlotte Symphony, the Hendersonville Symphony, the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra, and the Symphony for United Nations. Outside of music, Ginger has degrees in biology and ecology from UNCA and the University of Calgary, and she is currently an ecologist with the Natural Capital Project based at Stanford University.
